It's not like building a house - The three main factors that make building a van uniquely complex
1. Nothing is level, nothing is square, and nothing is straight, so you can leave the level and the plum bob at home.
The trick is to mark a centerline right down the middle of the floor and the ceiling of the van EVERYTHING will be measured and square up from the floor and out (or in) to the center lines.
2. Weight and weight distribution
Weight, It all adds up quick. It doesn't take very much before you hit that magic mark of over MGVW but that's not all. It is not only how much weight you put in a van that gets you, where you put it can be critically dangerous...
Carrying weight high in a van (upper cabinets, rooftop equipment and gear) can make a van seriously unstable steering and sway right up to the point of flipping on its side. Carrying too much weight too far back can affect steering response due to changes in the steering geometry as well as the back of the van coming around on slick road conditions... It can also greatly negatively impact braking performance under any road conditions.
And then there are the less critical consequences, take my own van for example a 2018 Ford Transit 350 high top. As an empty cargo van I averaged 18 to 20 miles per gallon. As a Home/Office/Work Truck I get a mixed average of 13 1/2 miles to the gallon... And boy does this thing hate climbing hills especially when I'm loaded down with a garage full of tools (which puts it right at Max Gross vehicle weight of 9500 pounds)
3. Nothing inside of the can is solid or stationary
Depending on attitude, temperature, and load everything moves and twists around a substantial amount... this is why most built out vans pop, creak, and eventually fail because something breaks or breaks loose from the van's metal structure.
The only sensible way to deal with this situation is to allow for the flex (let it move), rather than framing, furring or battening the entire interior of the can building it in sections with joints that allow for slip (my preferred way is to insulate them from each other with felt stripping) but even then...
.. One additional point that I would like to make is that generally a house built on a slab isn't going to ever have a 65 mile an hour collision... keep that in mind when you're building out your van. PRO tip frame anchored steel cable run over strategically placed plates can save you from having to occupy the driver seat along with 1/2 of a ton of lumber and all of your belongings)
