Some of the best traditions begin with a few good friends.

In 1982, our good friend Dan Richey and a small crew of swimmers started what would become a cherished Vero Beach Fourth of July tradition. Every Saturday, they made the swim to the U.S. Breconshire wreck as part of their training.

When the Fourth of July came around, they decided to make the same swim, place an American flag on the wreck, and celebrate with three musician friends who performed the National Anthem before the swim.

What began with a handful of swimmers, a small support crew, and a few musicians has grown into one of Vero Beach’s most beloved Independence Day traditions.

Looking back at these photos, from 2015 to last year’s flag placement, is a reminder of how a simple tradition, built on friendship, patriotism, and a love for the ocean, can bring an entire community together.
