Are you seeing brown marks or tracks across your lawn? It may be heat tracking.
Heat tracking happens when stressed grass cannot recover from the pressure and heat created by mower tires, equipment or heavy foot traffic.
This time of year, lawns across Florida start showing stress from extreme heat, dry conditions, and improper watering. When turf gets too dry, the weight and heat from mower tires can leave visible tracks, flattened grass, and brown stressed areas behind.
A few things that commonly make it worse:
• Mowing during the hottest part of the day
• Dull mower blades tearing the grass
• Cutting the lawn too short
• Compacted or dry soil
• Repeated mowing in the same direction
• Watering too lightly
Proper watering is one of the biggest factors in preventing heat stress. Your lawn needs deep, consistent watering to encourage deeper root growth. Quick daily watering can actually create shallow roots and make turf struggle faster in the heat.
For St. Augustine lawns, watering early in the morning is best, the cycles should be finished before the sun comes up. You want enough water to soak into the soil, not just wet the surface. Afternoon rain does not always mean your lawn received enough coverage everywhere, especially during hot windy days.
If your lawn feels crunchy, footprints stay visible after walking through it, or mower tracks linger long after mowing, your turf is telling you it’s stressed.
The good news is many lawns can recover with proper irrigation, mowing practices, and ongoing maintenance.
