A Note About Customer-Supplied Plumbing Fixtures
As a professional plumber with more than 25 years of experience and as a homeowner myself, I understand how expensive everything has become. Sometimes, stretching your dollar means looking for ways to save money.
One common way customers try to save is by purchasing a plumbing fixture themselves and asking me to install it. Iโm generally happy to do so, but there are a few important things to consider.
Stores such as Menards, Home Depot, and other big-box retailers often offer lower-priced products, including name-brand fixtures such as Delta. However, just because two products carry the same brand name does not necessarily mean they are the same quality.
Most manufacturers offer good, better, and best product lines. The items I purchase through my plumbing wholesaler are typically from the better or best lines and are designed for professional installation and long-term performance.
When you purchase a fixture from a big-box store and I install it, my warranty generally covers only the labor involved in the installation. If the fixture fails, you (the customer who purchased it) will need to contact the manufacturer or the store where you bought it. They may or may not stand behind the product. You may receive a replacement, or you may have to wait several days or longer for a part or replacement fixture to arrive. Once it is available, you may also have to pay for another service visit and additional labor.
It is also important to note that if you purchase a brand or product Iโm not familiar with, or one with complicated features, I may need additional time to determine the proper installation procedure. That additional time will be reflected in the labor charge.
The Bottom Line
I offer honest, upfront pricing, which we will discuss before any work begins. I mark up my material costs by a set percentage, and Iโm happy to explain how that works.
When you purchase the fixture through me, you pay for the product and installation one time. If the item has a manufacturer-related issue, I can contact my plumbing wholesaler. In many cases, they will provide a replacement the same day. I can then install it, and you will not have to pay for the labor a second time.
Ordering your materials directly through Plumb Co. provides not only product support but also peace of mind. If something goes wrong, Plumber Mike will come out and take care of the issue.
