Happy Halloween from IONIC DeZign Studios! 🎃🦖

Rex here, cutting through the pumpkin patch with my pencil and plans. The only thing scarier than these jack-o'-lanterns? A roof with no drainage plan.

Did you know? The original jack-o'-lanterns were carved turnips in Ireland. When Irish immigrants got to America, they found pumpkins much easier to carve. Even jack-o'-lanterns got a design upgrade.

Stay safe out there tonight, and save me the peanut butter cups.

Rex here, up a ladder in the rain, which is exactly where you find out whether a building was designed well. 🦖

See that clean roof edge? No dangling gutter, no downspout. The water is still getting handled. It's caught in a gutter built into the edge of the roof and sent down through a pipe hidden in the wall. Clean lines up top, dry feet down below.

Did you know? The ancient Greeks were hiding their drainage in plain sight more than 2,000 years ago. Many temples had a gutter running along the roof edge that drained out through carved lion-head spouts. The lions turned plumbing into decoration. We just make ours disappear.

Just this week, Eugene sat down with a church to talk about using this very detail on a covered walkway they're considering. Folks walking in on a rainy Sunday get a clean, simple roofline and no waterfall at the doors.

Coffee with Rex. ☕

Architecture runs on coffee — quite literally. The mid-century American coffee break took hold in workplaces everywhere, but drafting studios embraced it like no one else. Half the great buildings of the last fifty years were argued into existence around a plotter with a pot going — the real design review happening between refills.

Dinosaurs didn't have coffee. Look how that turned out. 🦖

Things are starting to take shape at Adriano’s!

Steel, framing, and a whole lot of potential. Our 10,080 SF restaurant-anchored retail shell building in New Kent County, VA, is coming together, and it’s exciting to see the vision take shape on site.

Right now, the structure is giving us a glimpse of what’s to come: a vibrant, welcoming space designed to set the stage for a stunning Italian restaurant. Before the first plate of pasta is served, there’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes to bring it all together!

We’re excited to watch this one progress and can’t wait to see Adriano’s come to life.

Rex Explains: a CHARRETTE. 📐

The word comes from 19th-century Paris, from the École des Beaux-Arts. When student projects were due, a cart — a "charrette" in French — rolled through the studios collecting drawings. Students desperate for one more minute would hop on and keep working as it wheeled away. "En charrette" became architecture-speak for the final frantic push before a deadline.

Today a charrette is an intense design sprint: architects, clients, and a truly unreasonable amount of coffee, all in one room, designing a building in days.

Dinosaurs didn't have charrettes. Look how that turned out. 🦖

You may have seen me around the office. I'm Rex — DeZignosaurus Rex, IONIC's resident architectural designer. 27 years in the business and I've never missed a deadline. (Mostly because I can't hold a pencil.) I'll be here every Friday with design talk, job-site visits, and strong opinions about coffee. Let's build something. 🦖
