🐝 Not exactly what we were expecting to find…

One of the first things we do during a roof inspection is lift up the shingles to check the decking, drip edge, and overall condition of the roof system.

On this roof, we lifted up the shingles and found a little surprise…

😳 The biggest hornet’s nest we’ve ever seen.

Needless to say, the inspection came to a very quick pause.

Roof inspections are never boring. One day it’s missing flashing, the next it’s a leak, and sometimes it’s discovering you’ve accidentally invaded an entire hornet civilization.

At Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors, we inspect everything we can find… although sometimes the wildlife has other plans.

🏗️ People always ask how we get all those shingles onto the roof…

Simple answer:
👉 We don’t carry them up ladders anymore 😅

When the manufacturer delivers the shingles, they bring out a boom truck/crane and place the materials directly on the roof. It’s faster, safer, and a whole lot easier on the crew.

Because let’s be honest… carrying bundles of shingles up ladders all day is a young man’s game. 😂

💧 Same-day roof repair… but not a real fix.

This homeowner called us out for a leaking chimney after another company had already “repaired” it. On the surface, it looked newer — but once we inspected it, the problems were obvious 👇

❌ New shingles weren’t even color matched
❌ Shingles weren’t glued down
❌ No ice & water barrier installed underneath
❌ Only roofing paper used — which will drip water directly onto the nails once it gets wet
❌ New flashing installed, but not cut into the brick like it should be
❌ Everything sealed with caulk instead of properly integrated

A chimney is one of the most leak-prone areas on a roof. If the flashing isn’t installed correctly, water will always find its way back in.

Fast service means nothing if the repair doesn’t actually solve the problem.

🐝 We came to inspect the dormers… not declare war.

We were checking out this roof for old flashing and possible leak issues when we looked over toward the dormer and found:
👉 A MASSIVE wasp’s nest.

Needless to say…
❌ The inspection paused immediately
❌ The wasps now own that section of the roof for the moment
❌ “Nope, not today” was said at least once 😅

Roof inspections always keep us on our toes — sometimes it’s leaks, sometimes it’s wildlife, and sometimes it’s an angry sky army guarding the dormers.

At Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors, we inspect everything… but we also believe in respecting the wasps’ personal space.

🐀 This is why we constantly talk about drip edge.

These homeowners called us because they had rodents living in their attic. Once we got on the roof, the reason became obvious 👇

❌ No drip edge installed
❌ Fascia board completely rotted out
❌ Rodents chewed through the weakened roof edge and moved right in

Without drip edge, water runs behind the gutters and soaks the fascia over time. Once that wood starts rotting, it becomes easy for animals to chew their way into the attic.

Now instead of a relatively small upgrade during the original roof replacement, the homeowners are facing:
💧 Roof repairs
🪵 Fascia replacement
🐀 Rodent remediation
🧹 Attic cleanup and insulation work

What saves money upfront often becomes thousands of dollars in repairs later.

💧 Caulk is not a chimney flashing system.

This chimney has been leaking, and when the homeowner called the last company out, their “solution” was simply to run caulk around the flashing.

The problem?
❌ It didn’t stop the water
❌ It trapped water behind the flashing
❌ The leak continued getting worse

Now the temporary patch has turned into a bigger repair, and the chimney will need to be completely reflashed to solve the issue properly.

At Reitzel Roofing & Exteriors, we don’t believe in “caulk and pray.” We fix the source of the leak so the problem actually goes away.

💧 This is why we constantly talk about drip edge.

This house has rotted fascia board around the entire roofline — and the reason is simple:
❌ No drip edge was installed.

Without drip edge, water runs behind the gutters and down onto the fascia board every time it rains. Over the years, that constant moisture causes the wood to rot out completely.

What could have been a relatively small upgrade during the roof replacement has now turned into a much bigger and more expensive repair.

Drip edge might not be the flashy part of a roof, but it’s one of the details that protects your home long-term.

🚨 This roof is only 5 years old… and already needs to be replaced again.

The biggest issue? This is a townhouse, and when the roofs were replaced, they were never properly tied together. Instead of rebuilding the transition correctly, they simply overlapped old shingles.

Here’s what we found during the inspection 👇
❌ No drip edge
❌ Rusted nails from years of water intrusion
❌ Caulk used as a temporary “fix” to try and make it past the warranty period
❌ Water still getting underneath
❌ Roof decking now completely rotted through

This is what happens when shortcuts are taken on critical tie-in areas. What looked “good enough” at the time turned into a full roof replacement only a few years later.
