Our Story

McPherson Design Group is a small business (SWaM #7368) located in Norfolk, Virginia. Roland E. McPherson, P.E. established the company in 1983. His innovative and unique approach to structural engineering and construction techniques has resulted in providing high quality and cost-effective services to a variety of clientele. McPherson Design Group currently has fourteen (14) employees with a tremendous wealth of experience, energy, and vision. Our firm has given the community a fresh look in the field of structural engineering. In addition, McPherson Design Group has a strong commitment to meeting schedules and works hard at providing a realistic approach to all projects. McPherson Design Group has successfully completed projects with various Developers, Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical, Geotechnical and Civil Engineering Firms, General Contractors, Municipalities, and State/Federal Government. Our work over the last thirty-six (36) years has mainly consisted of Indefinite Delivery Contracts. We have also maintained long-term working relationships with numerous military installations throughout the United States and abroad. McPherson Design Group engineering expertise includes Federal, State, and Municipal Government Agencies; Design-Build; Historical Preservation, Renovation, and Adaptive Re-use; Commercial/Office; Financial Institutions; Hangars-Airport; Higher Education-Universities; Hotel/Hospitality; Housing; Industrial/Manufacturing; Institutional; K-12; Libraries; Medical/Dental Facilities; Public Safety; Recreational; Religious Facilities; Retail/Shopping Centers; Restaurants/Dining Facilities; Parking Structures; Waterfront Structures; and Water/Wastewater Treatment Structures. Services on these projects include: • Feasibility or Related Studies; • Facility Condition Inspections and Structural Investigations (including above and below water inspections); • Value Engineering Studies; • Seismic and Wind Load Evaluations; • Structural Hardening for Anti-Terrorist Force Protection (ATFP); • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Design Features & Inspections; • Full Service Design, including Contract Documents, Specifications, Cost Estimates, Calculations, Shop Drawings, As-Built Drawings, and Permitting Services; • Special Inspections and Construction Administration; • LEED Certification in accordance with USGBC requirements for LEED Silver/Gold/Platinum Rating; • Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) preparation; • Operation and Maintenance Support Information (OMSI); and • Engineering Consultation Services during construction. Through the years, our firm has maintained the philosophy that the true value of our success ultimately depends on our performance in relation to our clients’ specific needs. McPherson Design Group strives to be at the forefront of computer technology, and, in order to continue to respond to the client's needs in a rapidly changing world, our team has experience in extensive engineering analysis and design software capabilities, including RAM Structural System, RAM Advanse, STAAD Pro, StruCalc, Adapt PT, ETABS, EnerCalc, SAP2000, SAFE and MathCAD. The firm has in-house computer capabilities to provide specifications in Specsintact and Masterspec formats, cost estimates in CES, MCASES GOLD, SUCCESS/WBS and Excel formats, and drawings in the current version of Revit Structure and AutoCAD/Architecture.
