Why does a crepe myrtle come back *denser* every time you cut it?

Plant hormones. The growing tips make auxin, which keeps dormant buds on the stump and roots asleep. Remove the trunk → auxin crashes → every bud fires at once, fueled by stored energy in that big root system. That's why the regrowth is faster and thicker than the original tree.
