Winter storm generator safety

The forecasted winter storm may cause outages. If you plan to use a generator, please keep these safety tips in mind.

• Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home
• Never operate a generator in an enclosed space; direct exhaust away from the house
• Plug appliances directly into the generator
• If using a generator with your home’s electrical system, use a transfer switch
• Turn OFF your home’s main breaker to help prevent dangerous backfeeding
• Never plug a generator directly into an outlet
• Use grounded cords, GFCI protection, and don’t overload
• Keep generators dry and refuel only when cool

Using generators safely helps protect your family—and the crews working to restore power during winter weather. To learn more, please visit esfi.org/generator-safety

WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER LET YOUR GAS TANK RUN LOW IN EXTREME COLD

This is one of those winter weather tips that sounds random until it matters.

When temperatures drop into the teens or single digits, a low gas tank can actually create problems. It is not because gasoline freezes. Gas does not freeze at these temperatures.

It is because of moisture.

Every gas tank has some air inside it. The emptier the tank, the more air space there is. That air contains moisture. When bitter cold air moves in, that moisture can condense and freeze inside fuel lines.

When that happens, fuel flow can be restricted or blocked. The result can be hard starts, sputtering, or in some cases a car that will not start at all.

Keeping your tank at least half full reduces the amount of air and moisture inside the tank. That lowers the chance of ice forming in the fuel system.

There is another reason this matters during winter storms. If you get stuck in traffic, slide off the road, or lose power somewhere, your car may be your only source of heat. You need enough fuel to safely run the engine for warmth while waiting for help.

Bottom line. In extreme cold, a fuller tank is a safer tank. It is a small step that can prevent a big headache when temperatures drop dangerously low.

Very helpful. Stay warm!

A prolonged stretch of bitter cold is about to settle in, temperatures are likely to stay below freezing for an extended period. That means melting will be slow, and impacts could linger for several days after the storm ends. Cold like this can be hard on plumbing, so now is the time to prepare.

Steps to help prevent frozen pipes:
• 🚰 Let faucets stream slowly (especially on exterior walls)
• 🚪 Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate
• 🧊 Cover or insulate exposed pipes, outdoor spigots, and crawl spaces
• 🔥 Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night
• 🏠 Seal drafts around doors, windows, and where pipes enter the house
• ❄️ If leaving town, never turn the heat off, set it no lower than 55°

A little prep now can save you big headaches later. I’ve definitely been there before.

Superheat and subcooling tell technicians if your AC is charged and working properly.

These measurements show how well your system absorbs heat inside your home and releases it outside, no guessing, just real data compared to manufacturer specs. If your system still uses R-22 refrigerant, repairs can get expensive fast. In many cases, upgrading to a newer system makes more sense than paying for costly R-22 fixes.

In our work, we have seen that long-term HVAC damage is often the result of slow leaks and moisture that go unnoticed for extended periods of time. These issues can eventually lead to mold, property damage, and expensive repairs, especially when they surface years after installation.

For that reason, our team prioritizes proper installation and layered safety measures from day one. We believe every system should be installed with the same level of care we would expect in our own homes, because prevention is always more effective than repair.

Up to 25% of heating and cooling can be lost through poorly sealed or sagging ducts. Proper strapping, sealing, and attic ventilation keep airflow strong, temperatures stable, and energy bills lower.

Leaking ducts —especially in crawlspaces— can also pull in dust, odors, and even mold spores. Regular duct inspections protect your comfort, your air quality, and your system.
