Recently I had a customer complain about an LVP floor that had an area that was "spongy" and flexed when walked upon. Due to the fact that unlocking individual pieces of this type of flooring was not practical, the best option was to drill holes on the surface, fill the voids with elastic caulking, and then close the holes with the waste product from the drilling. This fix is fast, effective, and barely noticeable when completed. Obviously this is not something that you would want to have to do, but in a situation like this where the movement of the floor was missed during the installation or occurred after the fact, this repair is very effective and can save hours of additional labor.
As seen by the photos, I started by taping off the area that was in need of repair. I then determine that three holes would be required for optimum results as I could now see the entire affected area. Next, I drilled 1/8 inch holes and then used a marinade needle filled with elastic caulking to fill the voids beneath the VLP planks. The elastic caulking will set up and fill the voids eliminating any movement. To complete the repair, I then took the vinyl waste from the drilling and put it back in the original holes. Then I quickly heated it with my soldering iron to melt filling and seal the holes. After this, the repair holes are a perfect color match plus this will allow the flooring to remain waterproof.
This type of repair can be performed on a variety of flooring media including laminate, engineered, vinyl or sheet vinyl, etc. The finishing steps might be different based on the type of flooring, but the process is basically the same.
