Hi all - just letting you know that we've packed up a few of our favorite native plants and moved to the mountains of west-central PA. While we will no longer be selling native plants, we hope to spread some native plant love and start a permaculture based homestead up here.

Blueberries… a tasty snack or a fabulous native plant?

Both actually! Blueberries are wonderful native plants that are valuable to caterpillars, bees, birds and pancakes.

These shrubs have beautiful flowers in spring, colorful (and tasty!) fruit in summer and stunning red fall foliage. Blueberries are truly both an ecological powerhouse and a lovely, multi-season ornamental plant.

Blueberries do need certain growing conditions in order to thrive, and it is best to plant 2 different varieties to maximize fruiting.

If you would like to give blueberries a try, we will have them for sale at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware County plant sale on May 11. We have the varieties ‘Duke’ and ‘Elliot’ as large, 3-year-old, fruiting plants. We also have all the information you need to grow these fabulous plants successfully.

So stop by and say hello to Duke and Elliot!

Zizia aurea – a native plant that is also a Swallowtail snack

If you are lucky, you can see this easy-to-grow native plant in bloom right now. It has lovely umbels of bright yellow flowers that bloom for a long time in spring to early summer – when many of our native plants are just starting to think about flowering.

The flowers are important to a number of short-tongued native bees and other insects that are able to easily reach the nectar in the small yellow flowers.

Zizia aurea is also a host plant for Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars!

Zizia can grow in considerable shade but will flower better in full sun to light shade. Plants look best in a grouping. They can grow to 3 feet with the flowers, but flower stalks can be trimmed back after flowering to control height if desired.

We will have this plant at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware County Plant sale on May 11. So stop by and get a snack for your local bees and butterflies!

Sometimes only a bumblebee will do.

Chelone lyonii, a North American native plant also known as “Pink Turtlehead” for the shape of its blossoms, is a boon to bumblebees in late summer and fall. Of all the insect pollinators, only the strong native bumblebees are able to force their way into the flowers to access the nectar. A little end of season treat – just for them. It is fascinating to watch the bees forcing their way in!

We will have the variety ‘Hot Lips’ at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware County plant sale on May 11 if you would like to be entertained by the bees in your own yard.

‘Hot Lips’ is a sturdy, upright plant with lovely dark foliage and beautiful pink blossoms that light up the fall garden. Another positive – Chelone is very resistant to deer and rabbit munching. Chelone likes moist soil, but is actually quite drought tolerant once established. It can tolerate full sun, but appreciates a bit of shade in our hot summer area.

An edible Celosia – What??!

What is not to like about this little beauty? This is Lagos Spinach (also known as Efo Shoko), a variety of Celosia argentea. I first learned about this plant from Truelove Seeds.

While we normally think of Celosia (Cockscomb) as an ornamental flowering annual, it is actually a food crop in parts of Africa and southern Asia. This variety has beautiful, purple splotched edible leaves that continue to produce after spinach has faded. We eat the leaves sautéed with onion and garlic, but they can also be used in soups, stir-fry or stews like other greens.

The pant eventually produces spiky, pink flowers that pollinators enjoy. The flowers are great as cut flowers or dried for winter flower arrangements.

If you’d like to give this plant a try, it will be available at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware County plant sale on May 11.

Stunning, edible leaves and beautiful flowers – what’s not to love?

Phlox ‘Jeana’ – Perennial Plant of the Year!

And well deserved I say! This native perennial phlox is a butterfly magnet in my yard, no wonder it won the top spot during the Mt. Cuba Center Garden trials.

We will be featuring this phlox at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware Countyplant sale on May 11.

This lovely phlox blooms for weeks in summer with clusters of pink flowers. It is incredibly resistant to the powdery mildew disease many garden phlox suffer from. Growing to about 2 feet wide and up to 4 feet tall, it blooms best in full sun with average soil moisture, but will tolerate some shade.

Plant some of this phlox in your landscape and watch the butterflies flock to it.

Grow an endangered species!!

Solidago Shortii is not only an extremely beneficial “keystone” native plant for pollinators, but it is also on the federal endangered species list. This goldenrod species lost much of its habitat due to development and damming of the Ohio River. Only limited populations remain in the wild. The Cincinnati Zoo Botanical Garden selected the variety ‘Solar Cascade’ and introduced it to the nursery trade in an attempt to save the species.

We will be featuring this goldenrod at the Penn State Master Gardeners of Delaware County Plant Sale on May 11.

Goldenrod ‘Solar Cascade’ has attractive glossy foliage and bright golden yellow flower clusters in fall. It is beloved by pollinators of all kinds. About 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall, it performs best in full sun and tolerates drought once established. It is a polite goldenrod, expanding slowly and I have had not seedlings in the 2 years I’ve grown it.

See if you can fit this special plant in your landscape and help us preserve the species!
