Two pests. One leaf. One seriously good photo. 👀🌿

Mike managed to catch both whiteflies and leaf miner damage in the same shot, which makes this a great example of what pest pressure can actually look like up close.

The tiny white insects on the leaf are whiteflies, sap feeding pests that tend to gather on the undersides of leaves. The winding pale trails are classic leaf miner damage, created when larvae feed between the upper and lower layers of the leaf.

Neither automatically means a plant is doomed, but both are worth noticing early. Healthy plants, regular monitoring, and thoughtful pest management can often keep minor problems from turning into major ones.

This is exactly why we look closely instead of just looking from the sidewalk. 🌱

Tiny flowers. Big job. 🌿🐝

Flowering groundcovers can do so much more than fill space in a landscape.

They help cover bare soil, add texture and color, and when allowed to bloom, those tiny flowers can provide another food source for bees and other pollinators moving through the garden.

Not every plant needs to be the star of the show. Sometimes the plants quietly filling in the spaces underneath are doing some of the most important work.

Beautiful, functional, and beneficial to the little creatures sharing our yards.

A garden does not need flowers everywhere to be interesting. 🌿💙

One of the easiest ways to create a landscape that feels full and intentional is to mix contrasting foliage.

Here, cool blue succulent leaves stand out against the bright green texture of the surrounding ferns. Different shapes, colors, heights, and growth habits can give a planting bed just as much visual interest as blooms do.

And the best part? Foliage keeps doing the heavy lifting long after individual flowers have finished blooming.

Good garden design is not just about what is flowering today. It is about creating layers that look beautiful together all year long. 🌱

Late summer gardens still have plenty to offer. 🌸🐝

Blooms like these add color and movement to the landscape while also providing an important food source for pollinators as we move toward the end of summer.

One of our favorite things about a thoughtfully planted garden is that beauty and function can exist in the same space. Flowers for us to enjoy, nectar and habitat for the tiny creatures keeping our ecosystems moving.

A healthy yard does not have to be perfectly manicured. Sometimes letting the garden bloom a little longer is exactly what nature needs. 🌿

Pollinators at work 🐝💜

There’s something pretty satisfying about watching a garden become part of the local ecosystem. Plants like this Russian sage are not just beautiful and wonderfully drought tolerant, they’re also an incredible food source for bees and other beneficial pollinators.

Creating a pollinator friendly yard doesn’t have to mean letting everything grow wild. Thoughtful plant choices can give you a landscape that feels intentional, handles our East Bay heat, uses less water, and still provides nectar and habitat for the tiny workers keeping everything blooming.

This little bee understood the assignment. 🌿🐝

❤️🧡 Tiny Flowers, Big Impact 🧡❤️

A little morning dew can completely change the way we see a plant.

These lantana blooms are already beautiful on their own, but add a few sparkling water droplets and they become living jewels. Every tiny flower in the cluster catches the light a little differently, creating a display that almost doesn't look real.

Lantana is one of our favorite landscape plants because it checks so many boxes. It is colorful, drought tolerant once established, loved by butterflies and other pollinators, and blooms for months with minimal maintenance.

Sometimes all it takes is slowing down for a moment to notice the details nature has been showing us all along.

🌿❤️ Hot Lips Salvia ❤️🌿

Some plants know how to steal the show, and Hot Lips salvia is one of them.

Its famous red and white blooms can actually change color as temperatures fluctuate. You might find classic two toned flowers alongside blooms that are completely red or completely white, all on the same plant.

Beyond its striking appearance, Hot Lips salvia is a favorite for California landscapes because it is drought tolerant once established, attracts hummingbirds and pollinators, and produces waves of blooms with very little fuss.

It is a perfect reminder that a landscape can be both beautiful and hardworking.

🌸 Simple, Graceful, and Full of Life 🌸

Cosmos are proof that some of the most beautiful flowers are also some of the easiest to grow.

With their soft pink blooms dancing above feathery green foliage, cosmos bring movement, color, and pollinator activity to any garden. They thrive in full sun, tolerate poor soil surprisingly well, and bloom continuously with very little maintenance.

If you are looking to add a little cottage garden charm or create a space that butterflies and bees will love, cosmos are a fantastic choice.

🌶️🔥 Homegrown Heat Hits Different 🔥🌶️

One of our homegrown peppers is finally ready, and it sparked a fun conversation.

People often ask why a pepper from the garden can taste so much hotter than one from the grocery store.

The answer is that the Scoville Heat Unit, or SHU, measures the amount of capsaicin, the compound responsible for a pepper's heat. While every variety has a typical Scoville range, growing conditions can make a noticeable difference.

A pepper grown in your own yard often experiences more natural sunlight, changing temperatures, and occasional water stress than one raised in the carefully controlled conditions of a commercial greenhouse. Those little challenges can encourage the plant to produce more capsaicin, making each pepper a little more unpredictable.

Whether this is a habanero or a ghost pepper, one thing is certain...we will be treating it with the respect it deserves! 😅
