Bensonwood Sustainable prefab homes + offsite construction solutions. 🌎🌳🌤 Bensonwood is an ENERGY STAR Partner and a member of the US Green Building Council.

While Bensonwood is known for it's exceedingly artful timberframe homes, it is also acknowledged as an innovator in building hybrid and panelized homes. Through custom fabrication of highly insulated panels and designs adaptable to the owners' needs, Bensonwood has become the premier design-builder of energy-efficient, high-performance buildings across the United States. Some homes built by Benso

nwood include two LEED Platinum-certified, Net-Zero public buildings in Maine and Vermont that create as much energy as they consume, and a Passive House in Vermont that requires no furnace. In 2012, Bensonwood launched a sister company, Unity Homes, who builds single family pre-designed high performance homes to reach a broader market. Learn more at www.bensonwood.com

For more than 20 years, Bensonwood's Beam Team has participated in The Prouty, joining thousands of people in support of the Dartmouth Cancer Center and its mission to advance cancer research, treatment, and patient care.

Today, our team shows up as survivors, supporters, caregivers, family members, and advocates, united by a common goal of helping move cancer research and treatment forward.

Last year, the Beam Team raised more than $75,000 as part of The Prouty's record-breaking fundraising effort. This year, we are proud to share that we have already raised over $18,000 and are working toward another strong showing in support of this important cause.

This July, our team will once again ride, walk, run, row, rollerblade, and more alongside fellow participants from across the region.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has already contributed, joined the team, or supported the cause. We look forward to participating again this year and helping make a difference together.

One of our favorite summer traditions is gathering as a team for pizza night at Orchard Hill Breadworks in Alstead, NH. It's especially gratifying since we built the timber frame pavilion in 2014.

Located just down the road from where Bensonwood was founded, Orchard Hill has become a community gathering place where friends, families, and neighbors come together each Tuesday evening throughout the summer.

We were fortunate to spend this past Thursday night enjoying great food, great company, and music under the timber frame pavilion our team built years ago.

A big thank you to the Orchard Hill team for hosting another wonderful evening. If you have not experienced pizza night yet, it is well worth the trip!

“The frame of a 180-year-old barn and the trim of an old farmhouse unite offsite construction to create a high performing home for the next century.”

This client designed project includes an existing structure on the property recently rebuilt using reclaimed materials from the site, including timber from a 180-year-old barn and salvaged farmhouse details.

Adjacent to that structure, our team assembled a new high-performance home using our panelized enclosure system and engineered timber components. The two buildings will eventually be connected by a shared walkway, linking historic materials with modern construction methods across the site.

The project also required careful coordination around seasonal site conditions and local tourism activity. Once the crane arrived on site, the structure moved from foundation to a weather tight shell within the same week.

At the center of this Xyla home is a 36' glulam timber frame truss spanning the main living and dining space.

This structural element supports the roof and wall panels for the bedrooms along with the living and dining areas, while also creating a warm focal point within the home. Compared to traditional timber framing, the structure here is far more minimal, reflecting how our building systems have evolved alongside advancements in energy efficiency and enclosure design.

Our 13" thick panel system uses engineered framing components including I-joists and glulam material to achieve high levels of performance without relying on large amounts of exposed timber throughout the structure. This approach allows for open spaces, efficient structural design, and long-term performance.

These timber elements can also be finished in a variety of ways, from natural wood tones to custom stains, helping homeowners shape the character of the space during the selections process.

Seth Clarke, our Director of Sales, is in the timber frame shop today showing us Douglas Fir glulam beams for the new stand in Massachusetts.

We first worked with Allandale Farm nearly a decade ago on their headquarters building, and it has been exciting to return to the project team for this next phase alongside .

As these beams move through the shop, our Hundegger machinery is used to precisely cut mortises, tenons, joinery, and other complex connection details before final assembly. Combining advanced fabrication technology with experienced craftsmanship allows the timber frame to come together with a high level of accuracy and efficiency.

The new farm stand continues the evolution of one of Boston’s oldest working farms, helping support a space that connects agriculture, community, and everyday gathering.

What are your performance goals?

Before thinking about square footage or finishes, it’s worth asking a more important question: how do you want your home to feel and perform day to day?

Real comfort is not limited to one room or one season. It’s a quiet bedroom at night, steady temperatures throughout the home, healthy indoor air, and spaces that feel just as comfortable gathering with family as they do during quiet moments alone.

When performance goals are clear from the start, design and budget decisions become more focused and more effective. A well-performing home creates greater consistency across the entire living experience, along with the comfort of knowing your home is efficient, resilient, and built to avoid surprises over time.

Our guide helps homeowners think through these priorities before plans are drawn.

Over the past few months, our team has traveled from Boston to Rhode Island, Portland, and Burlington for a series of industry events including NESEA’s Building Energy Boston, Better Building by Design, the Green Home + Energy Show, and the Rhode Island Home Show.

Pulling these events together takes a great deal of coordination and involvement from many people across our company. We are fortunate to have team members willing to spend long days on the road, at booths, in presentations, and in conversations representing the work we care deeply about.

Each year, these events continue to provide valuable opportunities to learn from presentations and discussions across the industry while also connecting with homeowners, builders, architects, and longtime partners. There is always something rewarding about shaking hands with both familiar faces and new ones who share an interest in better building.

A sincere thank you to the organizers behind these events, everyone who stopped by to connect with us, and especially our own team members who help make all of this possible year after year.

A recent Boston Globe story highlighted a Somerville couple who set out to create a home that better reflected their values around sustainability, comfort, and long-term performance.

After weighing the challenges and cost of a deep energy retrofit, they chose to build new using our Värm design and panelized offsite construction process to help simplify the path forward and better manage cost, quality, and performance.

Today, the home produces more energy than it consumes through a combination of a high-performance enclosure, efficient systems, and rooftop solar. Rather than banking the excess energy credits, the homeowners donate them monthly to support families served by the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

The project is a meaningful example of how thoughtful homeowners, efficient design, and high-performance building methods can create impact beyond the walls of a single home.

Built by many hands, for the whole community.

The Distant Hill Pavilion was raised by Bensonwood alumni and associates as a volunteer effort in the summer of 2024. The pavilion is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with accessible picnic seating designed to make time outdoors more inclusive for all.

Thanks to a $50,000 Kubota Hometown Proud grant, the pavilion will soon become even more accessible, with partial enclosure, solar-powered electricity, lighting, and upgraded picnic tables supporting gatherings, education, and everyday use along the trail.
