Learning about panelized construction and high-performance homes gave these homeowners another path that felt more aligned with how they actually wanted to live.

After spending a long stretch moving around a lot, finishing their Värm also meant finally having a home base. As they put it, they were looking forward to “going to the beach on the weekend and growing flowers” and “starting actually living what we put on pause for a long time.”

For this pool house in Vermont, Bensonwood fabricated a custom kit of parts for our GC partner, Four Lite Design-Build , to install on site. The posts are Alaskan Yellow Cedar glulams, selected because the engineering required more strength than the available Port Orford Cedar could provide at those dimensions. Above the posts, the remaining timber elements are Port Orford Cedar.

With no diagonal braces in the design, the structure relies on concealed galvanized steel post bases to handle lateral forces and keep everything plumb and square. The hardware, joinery, virtual fabrication, and installation details all had to be coordinated closely before the package ever left our shop.

To ensure seamless installation, our production team provided a precise drilling template for the concrete piers so the anchor screws would land exactly where required by the Rothoblaas post bases. We use a lot of their hardware across our projects, and it played an important role here in keeping the structural solution clean and largely hidden.

The feedback from the field was exactly what we hoped to hear: everything fit, the hardware was accounted for, and the installation went smoothly.

A smaller structure, but the same level of care goes into getting every piece right.

In Vermont’s Champlain Valley, a new Zum came together over just a few weeks, and the homeowners spent plenty of time on site watching the process unfold.

“The quality is apparent, and that’s exactly what we were going for,” they shared. “We were blown away by their professionalism, attention to detail, and pride in their work.”

They were also onsite for the blower door test, which came in at 0.42 ACH. Tight results are something our raising crews work toward on every project, and there’s even a little friendly competition between teams to see just how far they can push the performance.

More than a decade after opening, Burr and Burton Academy’s Mountain Campus in Peru, Vermont continues to serve the purpose it was designed around: making the building itself part of the learning experience.

Designed by Randall Walter the Mountain Campus was conceived as a living classroom with ambitious performance goals. Triple-glazed windows, dense-packed cellulose insulation, locally sourced and reused materials, and a natural timber frame all contributed to a building that went on to achieve LEED Platinum certification and Net-Zero Energy status. The building was designed and fabricated by Bensonwood before its components were assembled on site.

It’s rewarding to look back at a project where high-performance design was intended not only to reduce energy use, but to help teach the next generation about the relationship between buildings and the environment.

Bensonwood Director of Business Development, Seth Clarke, was recently featured on the Real Estate Connections Podcast. Among other topics, he and host Mary Foerster discuss a common misconception in homebuilding: the idea that a house needs to “breathe.”

For much of the last century, what we have often called a breathing house was really uncontrolled air leakage through the building enclosure. High-performance construction takes a different approach, aiming for much greater control over airtightness and thermal performance from the start.

That control becomes much easier to achieve when the enclosure is designed as a system and fabricated through a repeatable manufacturing process.

This Thursday, Bensonwood's Tedd Benson, Seth Clarke and Joseph Murray will deliver a talk at NESEA- Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's BuildingEnergy NYC focused on one of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry today: fragmentation.

Titled "A Dimensional Grammar for a More Interoperable Construction Industry,” the session will look at how shared dimensional standards could help designers, manufacturers, and builders work from a more coordinated foundation. Drawing on decades of experience with panelized building systems and offsite construction, the discussion will explore how moving more complexity into design and manufacturing can improve consistency, reduce inefficiency, and support more scalable high-performance housing.

The goal of this approach is to create enough common structure for better systems, products, and teams to work together more effectively.

This custom project in New York’s Hudson Valley came together in two phases. The ADU was completed first in fall 2025, followed by the main house raising in July 2026.

As the homeowners explained, “We see the ADU as part of the main house and the entire land,” adding that they never wanted it to feel “apart” from or tacked onto the main house. Both buildings were designed around that relationship from the start.

Watching the buildings take shape became one of the most memorable parts of the process. They described the raising as “almost too fast to comprehend and keep up with,” with each structure progressing at roughly one story per day.

Designed by Fabrica Architecture Studio, the project brought their architectural vision together with Bensonwood’s engineering, off-site fabrication, and raising crews to carry both buildings through to a weathertight shell.
