Friday afternoon in North Adams provided a chance to look back on 25 years of The Porches Inn and the people, ideas, and partnerships that have helped shape it into such a distinctive part of the community.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Bensonwood’s Seth Clarke joined historian Dr. Eli Janis and representatives from Burr and McCallum Architects and MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects for a conversation about the story of Porches. The panel reflected on the vision behind the Inn, its history, and the many people who have contributed to its evolution over the past quarter century.

The afternoon continued with live music, art, local vendors, food, and plenty of opportunities for the community to gather across the Porches campus. It was a fitting way to celebrate a place that has grown alongside North Adams while continuing to bring together architecture, hospitality, art, and community.

Congratulations to the entire Porches team on 25 years, and thank you for including Bensonwood in the celebration.

At this year’s Fine Homebuilding Summit, Bensonwood founder and CEO Tedd Benson joined builder and educator Benjamin Bogie for the event’s Luminary Interview, “From Timber Framing to Factory Framing, A Journey of Innovation.”

Their conversation traced more than five decades of change in the building industry, from Tedd’s role in the revival of American timber framing to Bensonwood’s continued work toward more predictable ways of designing, fabricating, and assembling homes. The discussion also looked ahead at the shift from a project-based model toward more repeatable building systems that can make high-quality construction more accessible to more people.

This Zum took the familiar single-level design in a more personalized direction, and we really like how the changes came together.

The homeowners added a porch along the side with the larger windows, a less typical move for the Zum that creates a more direct connection between the main living spaces and the outdoors. They also incorporated exterior sun shades over several windows, adding useful solar control while giving this elevation a distinctive look.

These are the kinds of targeted changes that can make a proven plan feel specific to the people and property without having to reinvent the entire design.

Hunter came to Bensonwood this summer looking for a closer look at how buildings move from drawings into fabrication. As a graduate architecture student at the University of Arizona, he had spent plenty of time thinking about design. Here, he wanted to understand more about how that design actually gets built.

His introduction to Bensonwood came during a school trip earlier this year, when his group visited our Keene facility to learn about offsite construction. That visit led Hunter to reach out about spending the summer with us, and from late May through mid-August, he worked throughout our production facility.

He started with framing and sheathing before moving through our roof and wall lines, where he gained hands-on experience with insulation, interior and exterior sheathing, service channels, and the sequence behind our panelized building systems. For Hunter, understanding why each step happens was just as valuable as learning how to do the work.

“My internship at Bensonwood this summer was more than just working in a factory. It was about learning and understanding a process.”

Hunter recently headed back to Arizona to continue his architecture program, bringing that firsthand construction experience with him into the next stage of his education. He has already expressed interest in returning, and we would be happy to have him back.

A beautiful Friday in Keene made for a great afternoon at the NESEA Pro Tour of Monadnock Conservancy’s new headquarters.

The walkthrough gave attendees a chance to see the completed building up close and hear directly from the people who helped bring it together. The presentations and conversations throughout the afternoon offered a useful look at the decisions behind the building’s all-electric, net-zero goals, high-performance enclosure, renewable energy systems, material choices, and overall construction approach.

Projects like this depend on strong collaboration, and it was especially rewarding to have so many members of the project team together in one place to share what worked, what was learned, and how each part of the building came together.

Thank you to NESEA and Monadnock Conservancy for bringing everyone together, to the speakers and project partners for sharing their experience, and to everyone who joined us for the tour. We’re grateful to have played a part in a project that will serve the Conservancy and the Monadnock region for years to come.

On this Colorado project, our raising crew worked through afternoon thunderstorms, lightning delays, tight delivery logistics, limited site access, and a changing schedule. At the same time, support teams back home were helping resolve field questions and keep materials and information moving where they were needed.

The local General Contractor TE Builders and their crew worked alongside our team throughout the raising, ensuring that everything came together despite the site challenges.

That coordination carried through to performance. The completed shell tested at 0.8 in the blower door test, an especially strong number considering the basement slab was not yet in place.

Every project brings its own conditions and surprises. Having people near and far who can communicate, adapt, and solve problems together is a big part of making the process work.

This home in southeastern New York shows just how much room there is within the Varm platform to create a larger home with character.

The main living floors total approximately 3,400 square feet, with another 1,400 square feet in the basement, bringing the home to roughly 4,800 square feet overall. With five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, porch and deck spaces, it is one of the larger Värm homes we have built.

Inside, the homeowners chose warm, rustic materials and finishes that give the home a very different feel from some of the more contemporary Värm examples we have shared. Its larger footprint shows how the Värm can accommodate more bedrooms, gathering space, and outdoor living while staying grounded in the same high-performance approach.

Homes like this are a good reminder that starting with a proven design does not mean every finished home has to look or live the same way.

We’re looking forward to Friday’s NESEA Pro Tour of the newly completed Monadnock Conservancy headquarters in Keene, New Hampshire.

The all-electric, net-zero building offers a chance to look closely at how high-performance goals were carried through the enclosure, mechanical systems, renewable energy, material choices, and embodied carbon considerations. Bensonwood fabricated the high-performance wall and roof components at our Keene facility before the building was assembled on site, allowing the enclosure to come together quickly while maintaining the performance goals established by the project team.

The tour will bring many of those collaborators back together to talk through the decisions behind the building, including Monadnock Conservancyy, SP | Architects, Michael Bruss, Consulting Engineering Services (CES), ReVision Energy, Resilient Buildings Group, Inc., and Bensonwood.

A successful home build is a team effort from the very beginning. The general contractor and local trades manage critical work before and after our raising, making coordination, communication, and shared expectations just as important as the construction itself.

This summer marks 25 years at our 6 Blackjack Crossing location - or as we call it, BJX - in Walpole, New Hampshire. Over that time, these buildings have housed an incredible amount of growth, change, and innovation, while continuing to serve as a home base for the people and work that keep Bensonwood moving forward.

Today, BJX includes more than 40,000 square feet of offices, a timber frame shop, and woodworking space. Each morning, the parking lot fills with talented craftspeople, apprentices, and employees from across the company. Clients come through the doors to meet with our teams, projects move from conversations and drawings into production, and decades of knowledge are passed between people working side by side.

We’re grateful for everyone who has been part of BJX over the past 25 years and for the community that continues to fill these buildings today.
