Planting more milkweed can improve the ecosystem as this plant is critical for the Monarch butterfly. Remove any black swallow-wort growing in your garden so the butterflies don’t confuse it with Milkweed.

Non Native Plant Highlight!

The Siberian Blugloss (Brunnera macrophylla) is from northern Turkey and TransCaucasia. This is one of the plants that can be beautiful in a New England garden. The pretty blue dainty flowers bloom from around spring time during April and May to June. It grows 12 to 24 inches tall and thrives in well-drained moist soil. This plant requires partial shade or dappled sunlight in zone 6. Pollinators that are attracted by the Siberian Bugloss are honeybees and even some native bees.

Intern diary entry 3- Last week I was able to volunteer at Hardy Pond in Waltham with the Waltham Land Trust. I worked on the removal of an invasive species called Japanese Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica). The Group also showed me how to harm invasive trees, in this case it was the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima). The bark removal results in the tree not being able to take up water or nutrients, which ends up killing it. So glad I was able to experience this and grateful for the knowledge it gave me! Thanks Waltham Land Trust !

Native Plant highlight of the day: Rattlesnake Master!

It is not native to Massachusetts though it does naturally occur in Connecticut.
As temperatures in the Boston area continue to increase with longer periods of drought, this is a plant that should be considered a top choice for translocation! I could see this plant becoming naturalized in our state.

Rattlesnake master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is a unique native wildflower. It looks like a desert yucca plant but actually belongs to the carrot family. It features spiky, sword-shaped leaves and striking, spherical white flowers. And it's a host plant for the swallowtail butterfly!

We saw four different types of bees visiting these flowers today: 3 native Massachusetts bees and a European honey bee! It's drought tolerant and is doing very well on this hot, dry curb strip bed.
