NOW you can plant. The nightly lows WON'T be dipping down to freezing again until the fall. We usually waited until Memorial Day weekend because we've had a frost within the week before. Now we can see all the way up to Memorial Day weekend. I would probably still wait to put out the hot temp loving tomatoes...and be prepared to cover plants in case this changes last moment...or wait until next weekend just so you can see.

Other counties are likely soon to follow. If you have sensitive plants, you'll need to take action tonight!

We always gauged our warm weather vegetables by the tomatoes...we're not doing it this year but if we were we'd usually wait for memorial day weekend. Weather Channel has this as our current 10 day forecast, though things can change. We've risked planting things too early and lost them (the first year we gardened and then again a few years later when we tried growing our first zucchini plants). We can get a frost as late as the week leading up to Memorial Day. I know it's hard to wait, but I would only plant cool weather plants now. Look for nights to be 55 consistently. Last year we were able to get things going early by about a week. So give it a couple of weeks and keep your eye on the forecast!

Continuing with talking about Hummingbirds, if you have a lot of shade and need ideas for shady plants that will attract them, here's a list!

You can attract hummingbirds even in a garden with little sun. It's easy, just plant these shade plants for hummingbirds.

I'm a board member of the Genesee Valley Audubon Society. We advocate for the safety of birds (it goes beyond this with conservation). This is the accepted and preferred recipe for hummingbird nectar. The red dye stuff you see in stores can be harmful! Please don't buy it. It's just water and sugar.

In a few easy steps, you can bring these nectar-loving birds to your feeder.

With hummingbirds on the mind, how can you make your yard a favorite stop over for them? I personally can't hang a feeder. I have no shaded areas where I can hang one to prevent the rapid growth of mold...this is dangerous for them. So to prevent having to take it down, wash it, and prepare more nectar every day or two, I am working on planting things they prefer. Here's a page that has a pretty big list of them...make sure you pay attention to the growing zones (we're in 6)

The best trees and plants that attract hummingbirds to your yard are also lovely to look at. It's a myth that they are drawn only to red.
