Rain rain go away…🌧️
The combination of heavy rainfall, and lingering melting snow makes trees significantly more susceptible to structural failure, uprooting, and damage.
Key potential risk factors to look for:
* Saturated Soil & Loss of Anchor: Heavy rain turns soil into mud, weakening the soil-root bond. This "gravy-like" soil allows roots to slip, causing trees to lose their ability to stand upright, especially during high winds.
* Root Suffocation: Waterlogged soil fills the tiny air spaces in the ground, depriving roots of oxygen. Long-term saturation leads to root decay and rot, weakening the tree's foundation.
* Heavy Loads: Remaining, melting snow is incredibly heavy. When branches are already wet from rain, this extra weight can cause limbs to break or, in extreme cases, the entire tree to collapse.
* Leaning Trees: If a tree was already leaning, the saturated soil makes it far more likely to fall over completely.
* Broken or Hanging Branches: Obvious damage that can fall on property or power lines.
