This past week we started looking at a series of turret roofs. Many of those turret roofs are pyramidal shape. Today we’re going to look at a bunch of other additional roofs, but some of these are different styles of architectural design and layout. The particular turret shown below is the top of tower of a church, here in Washington, DC. The remainder of the roof at the main part of the building is a gable style, with a larger gable roof towards the rear of the building. There’s also a separate additional turret, of pyramidal shape at a lower height than the main roof at the tower.

Explore the unique architectural styles of turret roofs in this detailed guide. Learn about their history, design features, and modern applications.

Today, we’re going to look at a couple different items on existing older modified bitumen roofs that have been abandoned, but instead of just removing the original elements these elements have been left behind and then modified bitumen membrane has been applied around them to cover them. This approach saves a little bit of money because it’s more expensive to remove old abandoned chimneys, skylight curbs, and access hatch curbs, but it might actually be better to just remove them all together to save costs of maintenance in the long run. Today, we will look at some examples.

Learn how to effectively roofing over abandoned non-roof elements. Our guide covers best practices, safety, and durability considerations.

Here on our website and in our blog, we have looked at the whole spectrum of different types of flat roof penetrations. Today, we’re going to look at how goosenecks can be used for rooftop exhausts to prevent type penetrations to allow the passage of air with generally lower risk of water infiltration. A list of the majority if the types of typical rooftop penetrations follows:

Learn about goosenecks at rooftop pipe penetrations, their purpose, and how they ensure proper ventilation and protection for roofing systems.

This past week, we looked at issues caused by and related to cleaning (or technically, the lack of cleaning) leaves from gutters. We looked at how leaves can decompose And break down as they work their way from a gutter all the way down into the underground drains, if not simply cleaned from the roof and gutter in a proactive fashion.

Learn how roof debris can cause clogs in underground drain pipes and discover effective solutions to prevent blockages and maintain proper drainage.

Over the years, it seems like every single fall and winter we get a call from one client or another who has a leak into their roof (or at least they think it’s their roof, but really in some cases it’s a leak that comes through the rear wall of the building) because the gutter is overfilled with leaves. The leak actually comes in at or near the top of the exterior wall of the building, below the roof itself.

Prevent clogs and water damage by cleaning tree leaves out of gutters effectively. Learn practical tips to keep your gutters clear and your home protected.

This past week we looked at a particular modified bitumen low slope roof rear termination where plates and screw type fasteners were used to secure the end of the modified bitumen roof membrane. This week we’re going to look at an example of that again, shown in the picture below. Here you can see, that these plates are, although not technically correct, doing an okay job to secure the edge of the membrane. Today we’re also going to look at some other examples of rear modified bitumen roof terminations where the membrane is completely loose and disconnected. Those cases are even worse than the one shown last week and here below.

Explore the intriguing details of rear roof termination at a flat roof. Learn about its structure, functionality, and impact on roofing systems in this insightful guide.

Fire escapes are somewhat common here in Washington DC. We specifically find many of these external fire escapes on buildings that are multi-family apartment favilities which have often been converted from single residences to multiple separate individual apartments or condos. In those types of cases, the original internal parts of the building will not necessarily have a secondary needs of egress from each area or residence. Those pathways are particularly important and rental unit requirements.

Learn how a properly designed Roof Deck Fire Escape can enhance safety and add functionality to your property, combining practicality with aesthetic appeal.
