Prepare your garden for fall season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since colder weather is creeping up on us, we want to recommend you on which tasks are underway! Autumn is a great period to get rid of everything that is dead in your garden, to tidy up, clear gutters and more. We know that does not sound appealing, but a certain charm in doing work around your home!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you closely examine your back and front yard, you should see if there are any w**ds or bald patches in grass. Our first tip is to remove w**d – you can do this manually, and you could apply the w**d killer on the lawn – if you choose second option, you should watch out for children and pets, so be careful how you distribute poison over the lawn, and be sure to keep everybody in the house while you do this!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You could also use slow releasing fertilizer for your soil and prep it for the next vegetation season over the winter months, this kind of prep will enhance soil quality really good. Organic mulches are great, because they are not focused on feeding plants like chemical ones, they are enriching soil. Mulch, manure and compost are organic fertilizers that release nutrients slowly. When you apply these in the fall you are much lowering number of tasks in the spring – this is great because you will have the time to enjoy spring weather.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Try to collect some seeds this fall, if you had some beautiful flowers that you would like to see in bigger number next season, why wouldn’t you collect seeds, this is meant for flower and kitchen gardens. For this choir, you should save up on some fruits, veggies and flowers and let them dry out completely. My mother planted pumpkin seeds this year from pumpkin I bought last year, and those pumpkins are waiting to be collected soon! Yum!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What we loved this season pt. 2⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We could talk on and on about what we loved this year and fill many pages with words! Today we will mention our favorite styles and trends that hit our backyards really hard.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many landscaping trends took us back to nature with more low-maintenance, water-smart and eco-friendly designs. People’s budgets dictated these trends for the most part (Remember 2020?) and a lot of good things came out, because designers started thinking how to make more for less.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Meditteranean style – A lot of people repainted their homes and wanted those terracotta pots everywhere, in combination with long-flowering perennials, evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses all of all lots of drought-tolerant plants. Many people put Mediterannean tiles, gravel floors and water features! What a year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Minimalistic approach – I know we mentioned all these before, but people were really into them. No ornamental objects, some lawn, maybe turf, clean lines, simple outdoor furniture, gravel. And these have tons of benefits when you accept minimalist approach. It can also be really eco-friendly, depends on your personal choices.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fire pits – People asked for them all of the time, cheaper, pricier, metal or stone, you name it. They were all over the designs. Homeowners want to have quality time with their loved ones by the fire.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Water features – pools, ponds fountains, rills or artificial waterfalls, in addition to the fire pits – people also wanted water. People have need for natural soothing sound and sight of water, and they wanted it to be incorporated in lots of designs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Veggie beds – Yes, we mentioned these in some of our earlier blog posts! Raised vegetation beds (just like those fruit trees we mentioned.) are very much in style. People want to eat and use their own veggies and herbs more and more!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What we loved this season pt. 1⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As the fall is geting closer, we would like to pay tribute to stars of our gardens! I know many people have different taste, likes and dislikes, some want lush garden that is low maintenance, some want explicitly deer resistant plants, many have dogs and want non-toxic gardens.. The list goes on and on. But this week, we will talk about repetitive and popular styles, trends and plants that many people incorporated in designs of their yards.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This post will consist of two parts, mainly because we want to do justice to every segment of the yard. We will start with trees, perennials, grasses and shrubs we loved this year, and we will most likely see in the yards of many homeowners next year, then proceed to talk about garden styles and trends that stole our hearts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fruit trees – Useful, beautiful and distinct. Yep, many homeowners are more and more into eating their own food, produced in the backyard. Fruit is something we eat everyday, but when it’s homeproduced and not full of undesirable substances – value is even bigger. Apple, peach, pear, meyer lemon trees and many more were planted this year in lots of yards, so kudos to hardworking homeowners that tend to work on producing their own fruits.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ornamental trees – If I had to pick only one I’d say that Olive trees (Olea europaea) were very popular (They do go hand in hand with styles that we will mention later this week!).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Perennials – The list is very VERY long, we cannot decide on one plant, and we know choosing couple of them is simply not enough, so don’t be hard on us! Lavender (Lavandula sp.), Coneflowers (Echinacea) and Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

How can we help fight climate change?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This weeks topic shifted to an eco-friendly theme, why you ask yourself? This summer we witnessed a lot horrifying events, when you think about all the flooding and fires that occurred all around the globe in the past couple of months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Landscaping can be fun, but it can also be very helpful when talking about climate change. Reforestation sounds very serious, but what it actually is – it is simple as planting trees! Trees can reduce harmful atmospheric carbon dioxide, clean air, provide fresh water and create homes for a lot of species of plants and animals.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And planting trees would actually be the cheapest way to help combat climate change worldwide. Potential is everywhere – you can plant trees on blank surfaces of the land. There are a lot tree planting initiatives throughout the U.S. Cost of planting a tree can vary from location and the type of trees that are being planted! If you are not into planting highly decorative trees and would like to participate in reforestation with your own land, a tree could be bought from $1 to $3 per one! And you can donate to those initiatives also, because planted trees need to be maintained, invasive species need to be removed and anything bad that could prevent forest from doing it’s thing!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a homeowner, your responsibility to maintain the landscape of your home is high, that is why many people don’t easily buy or move to suburbs, but for those that do choose to have their homes in the suburbs – our idea for you is as simple as to plant those trees! Why do you think some HOA regulations are that if you cut one tree down you must plant a new one to replace it? And in that spirit, today we will represent to you the best carbon-capturing and PM reducing trees to plant!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can read about our favorite trees on our blog!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Eco-friendly choices for your backyard⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although, beautiful rich lawns are coming from Europe, Americans tend to nurture that tradition in much bigger non-eco-friendly way! I once read that today’s rich green lawns are a symbol of the American dream, but with the times that are upon us, my thought is – why would we not participate as much as we can to make this world a better place?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lots of people these days tend to maximize their fair share in being environmentally friendly acts. That is a great trend that keeps on being popular. Some people just don’t like paying for the gardener and others don’t like the fuss – watering, fertilizing, w**ding, mowing etc. Whatever is behind this idea, we think it is either way awesome.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you did not yet participate in this trend, we would advise you to (before any landscaping has begun) take considerations in how would you use your new yard?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you want to use front yard for additional purposes? Do you have children or pets? Do you invite a lot of people very often? Do you like to eat and cook outside? Are there any specific needs for some features?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You should really consider what is most important to you and your family before you get rid of (almost all) lawn and there your budget will be very helpful with deciding. When you decide on what is important to you and do you have money for those segments, you should think about how green is your perfect landscape?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you want minimal grass, artificial turf or no lawn at all?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If the third option is what you prefer, we advise you to plant groundcovers!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In landscaping, the term groundcovers refers to a group of plants that are low and have a spreading habit, they are usually low-maintenance and could potentially cover large land areas.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We've chosen a couple of our favorites and you can find them on our blog! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Patio ideas⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As the seasons change, people spend less time outside, and more indoors. In spring attention shifts from interior to landscaping outdoors, but as soon as the nights get colder many people run in the closed spaces. What we suggest is: Start thinking of your outdoors in the fall, so you can enjoy your springtime as soon as it begins.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But, is your garden up to scratch for entertaining? If your backyard looks like it’s in the need of loving and caring – or some kind of WOW factor, we suggest you stick to us! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you consider how to design a patio, you should first take a look around and see – is there something that cannot be moved, something that could not be changed – are there any huge trees or some kind of installments. After that, we suggest you take a deep breath and stop seeing these things as roadblocks to your design ideas, you could use these unmovable things and make them into showstoppers or simply align your design according to their existence.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And if you have the space, why wouldn’t you go for multiple patios for more uses? Patio for dining, sociable lounge, fire pit patio, etc.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you got an uneven terrain, there are even more options for you, you could have lower level deck patio with pergola and upper level deck that is in the sun!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Warm summer days could end earlier and bring chilly nights in the blink of an eye, you shouldn’t run in the house, instead why wouldn’t you install a fire pit? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Materials, the most versatile design segment. If you want to make one patio, we suggest that you make one big and make it worth your – time, space, money. So concrete is always a great option, wood, pavers, gravel, tile, flagstone, brick etc.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Furniture – store bought, custom-made or DIY, this is definitely up to you, and always think about things that cannot be easily changed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Take a look at our blog for some patio inspiration photos!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Effective front yard trees⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whenever people buy or re-decorate their homes, front yard landscaping is the most important issue and If not thought out thoroughly - It can come out as boring or only one season captivating.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Numbers show that you can increase your home value by more than 10% by the strategic curb appeal of your front yard. So you can only imagine how much we expect from a single tree that we plant in our front yard.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your front yard is the place where your guests and neighbours get first impressions on your home, so having a tree in the front yard that makes a statement is essential!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You should consider some of our favourite trees for that front-yard pop that makes a statement all year round. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Japanese maple - Red to green foliage is an aspect that turns heads and always stands out, regardless of the season - So maybe you should pick Bloodgood maple, Golden Full Moon Maple, Autumn Moon, Sun Valley etc. And you can buy a small tree for around $30!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Eastern/Western Redbuds - You probably did see them, but didn't find out their names. Both are beautiful in spring! You should check which suites your hardiness zone better. Pricing goes from 15 to $50 depending on where you are purchasing them or are they bare-rooted or potted!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Crape Myrtle - The Lilac of the South! Beautiful flowers from start till the end of the summer. They don't grow too big and have shrub options, keep that in mind if you have a big home. Pricing goes from 30 to $100.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Birch trees - Choose between varieties, but our favourites are river and paper birches! But If you don't like raking that much - we suggest you don't plant these. Pricing goes from 25 to over $100.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Oak trees - Some of our favourites are:Chestnut, Nuttal, Red Oak, Japanese Oak...Oaks are a good long-lived tree and have minimal issues with insects and disease, their pricing is not that high, around $30!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Right plants - right place!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know many clients, DIY gardeners and friends that want to have a beautiful good looking garden beds - what many people don't know is that you need to think through your plant placement to get there! First of all, you should always pick plants that are well-suited to your soil and site conditions. For example, if you have a sunny garden with dry soil, lavenders will thrive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First of all, lush garden does not happen over one night, so patience is very much advised! Plants need air so spacing will be written on a plant tag, you should always follow those guidelines, if you strive for a lush garden (aren't we all?)!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
However, if you want to be economic and patient AND have a lush garden in the long run you should:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Stick with perennials and shrubs ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Think about sunlight needs⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Think about watering needs⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
aaand wait for the results!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When creating a garden bed we always think about putting generous amount of mulch (We talked about it last week - check out our blog). If someone asks me for my number one most important gardening tip, it’s always mulch. Mulch is a gardener’s best friend!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you start thinking about creating a garden bed and which plants to select, be sure to stay away from plants that are described as “invasive,” “vigorous spreaders” or “aggressive.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since we are in the mood for planting flowers - It is summer after all - we will make a few examples on which plants would go perfect together (thinking of their needs + appearance). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Astilbe and Hosta - Both shade loving, both perennials and a good mix for a garden bed!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Coneflowers, Black-Eyed Susans and some Buxus - no fuss, can thrive in heat, humidity, partial shade and dry soil!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hydrangeas and Daylilies - these are our fav! Hydrangeas can grow really nice in a good soil, with a good drainage just like Daylilies.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Mulching your garden⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you know what mulch is and what it can do? A mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil, you saw it probably lots of times. Mulch can reduce water evaporation, improve soil, help with lowering w**ds and lower erosion, it also helps with insulation and gives your backyard a sharper look… Mulching means that we cover soil in our garden with bark chips or gravel, mulch can also be plastic foil - but we always suggest that gardeners go eco-friendly (maybe go with biodegradable foil)!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you buy mulch from garden centers, it could get really expensive - especially if you have a bigger backyard and don't want a big lawn (and you know how we feel about lawns in low maintenance gardens). But whether it's a cheap or expensive mulch, they all perform similar. We like organic mulch, because it means that it helps with soil density when it decomposes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
DIY mulching is a much better option for your wallet, but you can always hire a pro - and save time and effort. In case you like to do landscaping yourself, before mulching you should kill and remove any w**ds present, trim shrubs, rake and put edging on your garden bed and treat your mulch bed (if there are some kinds of pests or maybe fertilizing).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We've chosen some organic and inexpensive mulch options for you: Bark, Composted Manure, Compost, Straw, Grass Clippings, Newspaper and Shredded Leaves.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Inorganic mulch ideas that look really great on your garden beds are: Landscape cloth, Plastic sheets and rocks and gravel. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you opt for annual garden beds and have time on your hands we would advise you to remove old mulch you put any new mulching. If you have a perennial garden bed you might be tempted to put a new layer of mulch on a top of old one, so we should warn you: it could cause rotting and plant starvation.

Composting at your home: a few essential tips⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s not to like about composting? No matter the size of your garden, yours could benefit from a compost heap – plus, it’s a great way to reduce the amount of landfill waste a household can produce.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Get a bin. Compost bins now come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit small or large spaces. You can purchase one from a garden center for a couple of hundred bucks, or you can make one using an online tutorial – compost bins can be fashioned from plastic storage tubs, wooden pallets, plastic garbage cans or even an empty wine barrel.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. The natural processes active in your compost heap creates a lot of heat and can pose a slim fire risk. Avoid positioning your heap in setbacks or near the house and make sure you monitor it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Beyond green and brown. Did you know that you can compost eggshells, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, paper bags and torn-up cotton clothing? However, don’t put any cooked food waste in your compost – it attracts vermin!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Just add water. If you have too much dry matter, a light watering will help it decompose more quickly. Your pile should be damp but not soaked.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Then add air! Make sure to turn compost regularly (every couple of weeks) with a pitchfork or shovel, and make sure your compost bin allows air to enter. Otherwise, your compost could become anaerobic, with a slimy appearance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. Use compost to make your garden healthier. Compost can act as a water-retaining mulch, a liquid fertilizer (called “compost tea”) and a lawn fertilizer:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As mulch, spread it in a 2- to 3-inch layer around flowers, bushes, trees and shrubs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To make compost tea, steep compost in a bucket for two days, and then pour the resulting liquid on your plants⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To fertilize your lawn, just add a 1- to 3-inch layer of compost to the grass, rain will do the rest.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Good luck with composting!

Backyard vacay oasis!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is that time of the year, hot summer days and nights can be tough when you have kids, or you're simply longing for some alone chill by the pool! Do you love lounging around on hot, summer days in your above-ground pool, but hate the way it looks in your yard? You aren't alone. While above-ground pools are budget-friendly, easier to keep clean, they simply aren't as aesthetically-pleasing as their in-ground counterparts. But that doesn't mean they can't be!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What is a MUST? You should make a border around your above ground pool, whether it is rectangular, round or some other shape, it should have a border. Pool edging will give it more of an expensive look and it will be clear that you made an effort. A less pricey opt for you is to get some pea gravel or sand, it is really cheap and looks great with almost any type of pool and backyard landscaping style that you have going on, with inexpensive river rocks or pea gravel is a gorgeous and quick alternative to traditional garden landscaping.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our personal liking is definitely having some plants around the pool. A lush garden landscaping is the most popular way to pretty-up an above-ground pool. To pull off this look like a pro, edge out your flower bed first, use easy-to-maintain plants like shrubs or tall grasses, then cover with mulch for a clean look and to boost plant life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You should also get some stepping stones, cheap option would be that you use some bricks or blocks that you already got unused, even If you buy some, that would still be an economic alternative!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Light up the night for less by installing inexpensive solar landscape lights into the flower bed or simple gravel border around your pool's perimeter!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A backyard pool is the ultimate gathering place for friends and family during the summer. Adding inviting furniture you can turn your pool area into a comfortable area for all your guests and turn it into a backyard oasis!

Mediterranean gardens: design ideas and tips for a bright display
Drought resistant, low maintenance and gorgeous, Mediterranean gardens are everything we want in our garden! Take inspiration from Mediterranean gardens to ignite that summer holiday look all year round, it is actually becoming more of a necessity due to the effects of climate change.
Extended hot, dry summers can affect the plants that we grow, so making our gardens more resistant to drought is actually becoming crucial. Combining brights with different textures, heights and more will make for a layered experience in your outdoor space. So, whether you're creating just a little corner that conjures up that holiday feeling, or if you're transforming a larger area, our guide will help get you started!
Mediterranean gardens are all about laid-back outdoor living: lingering over alfresco meals with friends and family, taking a refreshing siesta, and enlivening the senses with intoxicating scents and vibrant colors.
Firstly, a great place to start with any garden design is with your plant choices. Think colorful flowers in terracotta pots and exuberant climbers tumbling over walls. A Mediterranean garden will always smell as good as it looks. So, pick plants for fragrance as well as color. Olive trees are a classic nod to the theme. Some plants you should include are: Herbs, particularly lavender and rosemary. Palm trees, Red Hot Poker, Rock Rose, Bougainvillea and Geraniums, these would be a perfect choice for your new backyard. Your furniture should only depend on your own style, however we'd suggest that you use wicker, rattan and metal.
Gravel or DG in warm colors would be a really cheap option for your pathways and patios, but those terracotta patios are more expensive, great looking ones!
You can even buy feature mosaic elements like tiles, bird baths and water fountains. These will make a stunning centerpiece to your Mediterranean garden!
