Hosting friends for Halloween? Give coats, bags, and costumes a designated spot away from beds and upholstered furniture. Bed bugs can travel on belongings, so a little separation can help reduce the chance of bringing them into sleeping areas.

🛋️ Found a great deal on secondhand furniture? Inspect it carefully before bringing it home.

Bed bugs can hide in very small spaces, and upholstered furniture offers plenty of places to remain unnoticed. Before purchasing a used couch, recliner, chair, bed frame, or nightstand, check:

🔍 Seams, folds, and zippers
🔍 Under cushions and fabric coverings
🔍 Wooden joints, screw holes, and cracks
🔍 The underside and back of the furniture
🔍 Drawers, tracks, and interior corners

Look for live bugs, dark spotting, shed skins, or tiny pale eggs. If an item cannot be inspected thoroughly, leaving it behind may save you from bringing an expensive problem home.

A bargain is only a bargain when it doesn’t come with unwanted hitchhikers.

A secondhand costume can be a great Halloween find—but make sure bed bugs are not part of the bargain. 🎃

Before bringing a used costume into a bedroom or living area:

🔦 Inspect seams, cuffs, collars, pockets, linings, and zippers
🔦 Check masks, wigs, hats, capes, and fabric accessories
🔦 Look for live bugs, dark spotting, pale eggs, or shed skins
🔦 Launder washable items according to their care labels

Keep secondhand costumes separate from beds and upholstered furniture until they have been carefully inspected.

The only surprise this Halloween should be the costume! 👻

Bed bugs can affect any home or senior community—and their presence is not related to cleanliness.

Older adults, caregivers, family members, and community staff should watch for:

🔍 Small reddish-brown bugs near beds or upholstered furniture
🔍 Dark spotting on mattresses, sheets, recliners, or nearby walls
🔍 Shed skins or tiny pale eggs in seams, folds, and furniture joints
🔍 Unexplained bites or new skin irritation

Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. If you notice something suspicious, avoid spraying household products or throwing furniture away. A professional inspection can identify the problem and determine the safest next step.

Early detection can help prevent bed bugs from spreading to neighboring rooms or apartments.

🌙 How Do Bed Bugs Find You in the Dark?

They don’t need the lights on.

Bed bugs can use your body heat, carbon dioxide, and natural body odors to help locate a sleeping host.

That’s one reason mattresses, bed frames, headboards, and furniture near the bed are important areas to inspect when bed bugs are suspected.

Seeing unexplained signs? Getting answers early can help keep a small problem from becoming a much bigger one.

🍂 Cooler weather doesn’t mean bed bug season is over.

As temperatures drop outside, bed bugs can remain active inside warm homes, apartments, hotels, and senior communities. Indoor heating and access to people provide the conditions they need to continue feeding, hiding, and reproducing throughout the fall and winter.

Continue watching for common warning signs:

🔍 Live bed bugs
🔍 Dark spotting on mattresses or furniture
🔍 Shed skins or tiny eggs
🔍 Unexplained bites after sleeping or resting

Bed bugs are a year-round concern. If you notice possible activity, schedule a professional inspection instead of waiting for cold weather to make the problem disappear.
