Building renewal creates a lasting impact when its benefits extend beyond the built environment and directly into the communities it serves.

This revitalization can be seen at Michigan Central, Ford Motor Company's 30-acre innovation campus in Detroit, with the restored Michigan Central Station as its centerpiece. Once vacant for more than 30 years, the Station is now part of a district generating billions in economic activity and supporting thousands of jobs. A new report by BJH Advisors also documents more housing, rising median incomes, and lower unemployment in the surrounding neighborhood.

Quinn Evans is proud to have led the transformation of Michigan Central Station, contributing to its lasting impact on Detroit and communities across Michigan.

In an era dominated by digital experiences, hands-on learning is making a comeback.

In our latest Insight, Quinn Evans’ Allison Leighton, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, LFA, and Allison McElheny, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, explore how hands-on learning is expanding beyond traditional career and technical education (CTE) programs into schools, libraries, museums, and community spaces. Drawing on examples across these settings, they examine the types of spaces supporting this shift and the design considerations that help them succeed.

As educational needs continue to evolve, experiential learning spaces can help foster curiosity, confidence, and community while preparing people for the future.

Congratulations to Melody King, CPA, CGMA, on her retirement after 15 years with the firm.

Melody joined BCWH in 2011 and remained an essential part of our Richmond office following the firm’s merger with Quinn Evans in 2018. She became Quinn Evans’ controller in 2023, helping guide the firm’s financial operations and position us for continued success.

We’re grateful for Melody’s many contributions and wish her all the best in retirement, with plenty of time for gardening and tending to her prized Hanover tomatoes—which our team will sorely miss!

Join us in wishing Melody a happy retirement and read more about her time with Quinn Evans: https://www.quinnevans.com/news/melody-king-retires-from-quinn-evans

What if improving health and wellbeing in buildings didn’t always require major renovations?

As part of our The American Institute of Architects Upjohn Research Initiative, conducted in partnership with the University of Oregon, we studied how even small changes to architectural design can support circadian health. Focusing on three school and office environments as case studies, we evaluated how design interventions affected daylight access within these existing buildings.

Watch this video to hear Julia Siple, AIA, LEED AP, WELL AP, and Denise Gravelle, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, share insights from the findings, including lessons learned from Old City Hall in Richmond, Virginia.

In a Wall Street Journal article titled “The Lincoln Memorial Undercroft: A Monumental Foundation,” Harold Holzer calls the museum “one of Washington’s most breathtaking attractions.”

Holzer, an Abraham Lincoln scholar and faculty member at Hunter College, appreciates that, in addition to presenting exhibits about the memorial’s construction and place in American history, the museum provides views into the undercroft. He writes that it “is more than a tribute to an engineering marvel; it is a reminder that even iconic monuments must evolve over time, none as meaningfully as this one has.”

In a piece titled “Abandoned Homes in Baltimore Are Now Being Fought Over in Bidding Wars,” Wall Street Journal reporter Nicholas G. Miller explores why Baltimore’s housing vacancy rate has fallen by nearly a third over the past 10 years.

He cites the Johnston Square neighborhood, where nonprofit developer ReBUILD Metro has rehabilitated more than 50 vacant homes, as a successful example of the “whole-blocks” approach to redevelopment.

We’re proud to have worked with ReBUILD Metro on The Hammond at Greenmount Park, a mixed-use building that provides 109 units of workforce housing colocated with the Johnston Square Branch Library
