Our version of a German smear coat. After extensive rebuilding of sections of this shifting walls over the years to include securing the leaning back wall to the first floor joist to prevent more movement in the future, we were asked to remove all joints, repoint and then parge wall to smooth out all of the defects from shifting and spalling bricks. This is a first for us but we tried to make the work look like a weathering German smear coat with the red brick peeking out. We also removed paint, replaced all the wood sills under windows with a precast sill, caulked and touched up paint on the windows/doors and replaced the screens on the windows at completion. The darker mortar on the back wall was still drying in this picture as it wasn’t fully cured and will eventually match the rest of the building.
