"My brother is here! "Melissa Gilbert exclaimed talking about brother Jonathan. The crowd immediately applauded. “We were just taking a group picture with the whole cast and he walked in. He made the grandest entrance of any other cast member. Obviously everyone was screaming. I burst into tears. Alison was inconsolable.”

Being part of this group really does sharpen your eyes. Suddenly you notice the things that slipped by for years—like the railing in “A Wise Heart.”
Not white.
Not even painted.
Just plain, unfinished wood, quietly minding its business on the Walnut Grove set.
It’s such a perfect reminder of how Little House balanced simplicity, thrift, and storytelling. These tiny imperfections make Little House on the Prairie feel even more real—and make rewatches endlessly fun.
Welcome to the club of delightful over-noticers… there’s no going back now 😉

Alison Arngrim has said that the original plan was for Mary Ingalls to eventually marry John Sanderson. However, because there was no romantic chemistry between Melissa Sue Anderson and Radamés Pera, the storyline was changed, leading instead to Mary becoming blind and attending a special school.
Radamés Pera, who played John, later spoke openly about the situation. He explained that Michael Landon chose to write a romantic storyline between his character and Mary Ingalls, even though Melissa Sue Anderson was a few years younger than he was. According to Pera, neither of them had ever portrayed romance before, and the situation proved difficult. He felt she was not ready for such a storyline and that it created tension on set.
Pera said he made sincere efforts to build a friendly, comfortable working relationship that could translate on screen, but those efforts were not welcomed. The strain of being rejected both on set and by classmates at “normal school” eventually took a toll on him. He admitted that he finally lost his patience one day, which contributed to his dismissal from the program.

Yes—and that passage is one of the most quietly devastating moments in the entire Little House story.
In By the Shores of Silver Lake, Laura states it with heartbreaking simplicity, almost restraint, which somehow makes it hurt more:
“Mary and Carrie and baby Grace and Ma all had scarlet fever. Far worst of all, the fever had settled in Mary’s eyes and Mary was blind.”
Mary was only 14 years old in 1879, and with just one sentence, Laura marks a line that changes everything—not only Mary’s life, but the rhythm of the whole family. Childhood shifts. Responsibility deepens. Laura grows up faster.
What’s so powerful is how Laura doesn’t dramatize it. She lets the fact stand on its own, trusting the reader to feel the weight. And we do—every time.
It’s one of those moments that explains why the series resonates so deeply: real loss, real resilience, and love carried quietly forward. 🌾🤍

ONE MORE TIME WITH LOVE
Laura is glowing because she found out she was pregnant. Caroline also announces to Charles that she is pregnant, but that's not the case: Dr. Baker informs her that she is having early menopause and won't be able to have any more children. Charles, heartbroken to learn that he will never be able to have another natural child, decides to take Caroline on a second honeymoon and then renew their marriage vows together.
THE LOST PART 1
Charles and Albert meet the Cooper family during a trip: parents Alvin and Sarah, son James, eleven years old and daughter Cassandra, eight years old. The Coopers are on their way to join Uncle Jed. When they encounter a steep hill, Charles and Alvin decide to proceed one step at a time. While James and Cassandra are in the Ingalls wagon, Alvin loses control of his wagon, which goes off-road and overturns, killing his husband and wife. Charles brings James and Cassandra to their uncle Jed, but they are a poor old man and unable to take care of them, so he decides to keep them with himself, while he looks for a foster family who will accept them, knowing that he cannot financially support other children in his already overcrowded home.
THE LOST PART 2
Rev. Alden announces he's found the Tompkins family, willing to take in the two orphans, but doesn't know that he actually just needs two arms. At one point, James is falsely accused of stealing money and is scolded by Mr Tompkins. The abuse continues and James and Cassandra run away. Tompkins tells the Ingalls that the children are missing but, when he refuses to help Charles in their search, it becomes clear that he is more interested in getting the children home to teach them a lesson rather than their safety. In the end, Charles and Caroline decide to keep James and Cassandra with them, despite the constraints they live in, to prevent them from suffering further abuse and because they sincerely love the little ones, they are pleasantly surprised by their decision.

This question comes up all the time with Little House fans 😅 — and there’s actually no curse at all.
In the TV series, the Ingalls family mostly had daughters simply because of storytelling choices, not anything historical or supernatural. Michael Landon wanted the show to center on Laura’s perspective, sisterhood, and the experiences of pioneer girls. Having mostly daughters kept that emotional focus tight and consistent.
Historically, Laura Ingalls Wilder did have a baby brother:
Charles Frederick Ingalls, born in 1875, who tragically died in infancy.
The show chose not to include him, likely because infant death was a very heavy topic and difficult to weave into an ongoing family series.
Later on, the show did introduce baby Grace, and eventually Albert (adopted), James, and Cassandra, but by then the series had shifted into broader themes like adoption, loss, and chosen family rather than biological lineage.
So no curse — just:
Narrative focus
Sensitivity to tragic real-life events
And Michael Landon shaping the story he wanted to tell
Still… once you notice it, it does feel oddly consistent 😂
