When digging, check your tuber clumps for the mother tuber. The mother tuber has a tendency to rot. Here’s a video of me ripping one in half after I cut it off the clump.

Hard frost 🟰 Time to overwinter the dahlias!!

Here is my overwintering process, keep in mind there are many different ways to overwinter dahlias and it depends on your storage conditions.

- I dig my dahlias a few days after we get a hard frost. The leaves look like wilted spinach by the end of the day after the frost.

- I then dig and let the tubers dry on tables indoors with fans on for about 2 days or until dry.

- I store mine in my garage. Once dry I shake off as much dirt as I can and label each clump with a sharpie.

- I then put the tubers in paper bags with peat moss and put the bags in a cardboard box (don’t skip the box step it helps keep the moisture level right!).

- I then put them in a corner in my garage away from the heater. 😊 It’s really depends on your house conditions as far as humidity but the peat moss helps regulate some of the moisture.

- I will then check on them every month or so and spritz with water as needed.

- Then I will start them in the garage in mid-March and they get transplanted outdoors at the beginning of June.
