Hello all. I know it's been a while since ive. Posted but we have been busy. As you can probably guess this video wasn't taken in my own shop. For the past few months ive been working with doug white hardwoods out of Marissa il. While it's a bit different than what I typically do ive been learning a lot about wood and how to make my projects better. We also just purchased a home and have been making it livable which it's almost there. Once we get the house down there will be some more wood turning happening. Who doesn't love a good deal on some hardwood shorts. These pieces are between 18 inches and 4 feet and come from Doug White lumber and hardwoods in Marrissa, IL. When purchased as a mixed bag, they are sold by the pound, which allows you to get a good variety of specialty woods not commonly available for cheap. Go out and see what he has available. If you look hard enough there, curry maple and cherry.

The board I got today, if sold by the board foot, would be $50, but it was only $20 because of this amazing deal.

This cherry dish was a blast to make. It is only about 5 inches in diameter, but while starting to turn the face, the lathe started walking across the shop.

Walnut is a beautiful wood by itself, but this blank had some serious checks that needed to be filled. This log came from a small side street in Swansea, Illinois, and went down this past fall. It has been part of our speed drying process. While that process is quick, it leaves you with lots of checks and can leave you with wet pockets within the wood while turning. Contact us today to get this beautiful live-edge bowl before someone else does for $100.

You have several choices for cutting boards. Face and side-grain boards are great options for light use that don't get chopped daily, while these beautiful end-grain boards will withstand years of abuse. This is because wood is like a bunch of straws; as your knife makes contact with the board, the wood fibers will split out of the way and come back into place without damaging the board. To achieve this, we first glue several boards together, then plane them down smooth so we can cut and reglue the side grain board and turn it into one of these beautiful end grain boards.
The smaller board is 10x10 and available for $125
The larger board is 10x13 and available for $150

Our First Series- Rememberance
"Remembrance" is a series of bowls and platters made from materials left behind by our late neighbors at Wood Designs, Inc. Many locals are familiar with the building and with Steve McFarland, the artisan behind many fabulous creations in the area. We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore the remnants of his legacy and walk away with some beautiful materials he left behind.

"The long way around" is a piece of deep thought. It is a nod to sticking out the tough, boring times, waiting for your next big thing. This piece of Ash has been one big experiment. First, it was rough turned green, and then put in a box to dry. This piece will kick around the shop until we know this drying method works.
