“Alright, quick lesson on this one.”

See how this hook isn’t pinched tight and taped smooth?
That’s the kind of thing that seems fine… right up until it isn’t.

Best case:

* It folds over and still pushes through conduit.

Worst case:

* It catches on a coupling
* Opens up inside the pipe
* Gets wedged where you can’t push OR pull it
* And now a 2-minute pull turns into an hour problem

Even if it makes it through, leaving the hook exposed increases drag and snag points the whole way.

Little details matter in electrical.
A lot of the job is preventing problems before they happen — because once the wire is stuck in conduit, nobody’s having a good day after that.

⚡ The Lightning Damage Didn’t Stop At The AC

Customer called because the AC unit quit working after a storm.

Started checking things over:
✔ Furnace had power
❌ Furnace wouldn’t turn on

Found the transformer was blown from the surge.

But it didn’t stop there.

The surge kept traveling through the system and made its way into the furnace control board before it finally ran out of steam.

That’s the crazy part about lightning damage:
Sometimes the first failed part isn’t the only failed part.

Surges can travel through wiring, equipment, and electronics in ways most people never realize until things start failing afterward.

Lightning can do some pretty wild things.

This AC unit had a frustrating problem.
Sometimes it would trip within minutes. Other times it would run perfectly fine for weeks.

The cause ended up being the wire feeding the unit.

At some point, someone had used Romex — wiring meant for dry indoor locations — outside where it was exposed to moisture and weather.

Over time, the insulation deteriorated. When rain or moisture got into it, the wires would short together and trip the breaker. Once things dried back out, the unit would work again like nothing happened.

That’s what makes electrical issues like this tricky.
The symptom comes and goes, but the real problem keeps getting worse underneath.

This is a good example of why using the correct materials matters.

The right product might not seem important the day it’s installed, but years later it can be the difference between:

* reliable operation
* intermittent failures
* nuisance tripping
* or even a safety hazard

We do it this way because electrical work is supposed to last — not just work temporarily.

⚡ Lightning Can Do Some Crazy Things

This black mark tells the story.

A lightning surge hit nearby and the voltage became so intense it actually jumped from the grounded metal box to the hot wire on the GFCI

That’s not something most people ever expect to see—but lightning doesn’t play by normal rules.

When surges hit, they can:

* Damage breakers
* Destroy electronics
* Burn wiring
* Take out appliances instantly

Sometimes the damage is obvious.
Sometimes it shows up months later.

Electricity is powerful enough on its own… but lightning is on another level.

Employee: “Wait… you guys had to run all this just for one AC unit?”

Taden: “Yep. These mini splits still need dedicated power, disconnects, properly sized breakers, and everything tested before startup.”

Employee: “I figured the HVAC guys just plugged it in somewhere.”

Taden: “Not quite. If the electrical side isn’t done right, the system can trip breakers, throw faults, or not even start at all.”

Employee: “So what are you checking now?”

Taden: “Making sure we’ve got the correct voltage and everything’s wired properly before they fire the unit up. It’s a lot easier to fix problems now than after the ceiling’s closed up and the business is full of customers.”

Employee: “Honestly… I never realized how much electrical goes into something people just expect to blow cold air.”

Taden: “That’s usually how it goes. If we do our job right, nobody thinks about it again.” ❄️⚡

Pretty sure the spiders were paying rent in this panel 🕷⚡

This outdoor panel has seen a few South Dakota seasons.

Most homeowners never see the inside of their electrical equipment unless something stops working — which is why regular inspections can matter more than people think.

And yes… it still worked if you were wondering 😅

What customers see:
“Just running a couple wires.”

What it actually took:
Cody shuffling his way through 50 feet of attic trusses above a convenience store to get power across the building, then routing the wiring up through the roof to another coworker working up top.

Then turning around and doing it all over again for a second location so the store could get additional cooling installed.

A lot of electrical work happens in places customers never see:

* hot attics
* tight crawl spaces
* cramped mechanical rooms
* above ceilings
* through insulation and trusses

The finished result looks simple.
Getting there usually isn’t.

Help me out here. Seems like people are pretty excited for the 7 Brew to open up! I’d never heard of one before we did this job. I’m also not a coffee guy. So help me out.

What is so great about 7 Brew so I know why people are excited!
