Detach Your Hose Day is October 30!

Winter is coming, and those of us in colder weather know that a forgotten garden hose can wreak havoc on the home. Frozen water inside the hose puts pressure on connecting pipes, potentially damaging the entire plumbing system.

Giving History a Lift

Today, Watertown’s Carnegie Library is maintained and occupied by the Codington County Historical Society and is used as a community Museum. This beautiful historic building is located in the heart of Downtown Watertown and many local residents still refer to it as “The Library.” It was built with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation in 1903.

When Andrew Carnegie was using his fortune to give people all around the world the opportunity to read and learn, he included some standard features. One was a large staircase. The entry staircase symbolized a person’s elevation by learning. Most libraries also had a lamp post or lantern installed near the entrance, meant as a symbol of enlightenment.

In the Historical Society, we are big fans of historic architecture. We love this historic building, but we don’t like that the stairs form a barrier for some people who want to visit.

The Plan
In order to maintain the historic architecture of the building, we have chosen a lift that will not be directly attached to the building. The project will include concrete work to prepare for the lift and installation of the lift. The lift will be placed on the east side of the building and will take visitors up to the front porch and down to the basement entry from ground level. It will be like a freestanding enclosed elevator right next to the building.

Meet Red, the man behind it all. Zachery “Red” Blauer is no stranger to the Watertown area. After first moving here in 2006, Red met his wife, Laren, and 3 years later the two of them made their way north to Fargo/Moorhead. While there, Red earned his plumbing degree at MSCTC and worked his way up the ranks at a couple of well known plumbing companies before eventually earning his own Master Plumber license.

After spending a decade in the FM area, Red and his wife preferred the idea of raising their two young children closer to family so they made the move back to Watertown and established Red’s Plumbing.
