Here are a few signs to keep an eye out for a wet basement without the obvious ones such as flooding, water seepage, puddles or condensation.
1. Efflorescence: a white powdery or fluffy growth on basement walls and floors. efflorescence is a result of moisture mixing with the water soluble salts within the wall and leaking into the basement.
2. Cracks in the basement floor: walls and foundation are all a sign of hydrostatic pressure, to simply explain this the water collecting around your foundation has to go somewhere. And if the footing drains are clogged, then the water can go into your basement. The hydrostatic pressure pushes against your basement foundation and will eventually cause cracks, leaks, acid damage and other problems.
3. Chipped concrete walls: which is caused by high amounts of pressure and water.
4. Drylock flakes: Drylock is a waterproofing concrete sealer that many homeowners use as an alternative way to waterproof their basement. Drylock can be a great product to use but on the other hand if there is enough pressure moisture will make its way in causing the Drylock to chip and flake.
5. Rust: a big one that is normally overlooked by homeowners. heavy rust is a certain sign of ongoing flooding.
6. Musty smell: if you are not sure about the smell, check the bottom of anything left on the floor for water stains.
7. Stachybotrys chartarum (aka black mold): the basement is a prime area for black mold to grow due to it’s high moisture content,poor ventilation and darkness. If you’re thinking of finishing a basement many reputable contractors will advise you to have your basement waterproofed before hand.You wouldn't want to invest money on a project that could potentially wind up destroyed.
