So this is kind of cool - I offered my 'handyman' services to an up-coming "Repair Cafe" in Montour Falls and they are meeting with me March 1st. I had never heard of the program before but I read about it in "The Odessa Files", a local news outlet. Being retired, I have the time and being a 'tinkerer' all of my life, I think it would be fun to show folks how to repair their own items around the house. I'm hoping I can be a part of it. This is the article I came across :

I just read that one of my favorite mentors has passed away. Lee Sillimen was an outstanding mechanic, repairing most anything you could present him. He was a local man whom I met when I started Lakeside Refrigeration Service. He and I worked together at few different local restaurants. I used to call him for advice and was even surprised when he'd call me for advice on repairing a refrigeration problem. He was not only very smart, he was gentle and funny. I noticed how connected he was with the local business owners and learned how to treat customers with, above all, fairness. I learned from him how to gain trust by being honest and charge people what the actual repair was worth. Sometimes the job was was very difficult and took a lot of time and and the owner would be charged a sufficient fee. Other times (most times actually) the problem was fairly simple and Lee would charge them 20 bucks or tell them, "Just give me lunch someday" - in lieu of money. Because of his graciousness, he gained so much respect from the locals. I aspired to follow his footsteps and business practices. Neither one of us ever got rich but we had love and support in the community. I had a lot of admiration for that man. Thank you Lee Sillimen and may you Rest in the Peace you lived.

One last job @ Leidenfrost Vineyards - 2 of the 4 - 1100 gal. tanks ready. Just have to finish with controls and insulation. Fun job but bittersweet. It’s what drew me to the industry after retiring from CMC. I don’t think I’ll ever stop working all together since there aren’t many independent Refrigeration Mechanics in the area but definitely going to miss piping wineries and breweries. Life is good 👍

So… another $5700.00 saved. My friend was told she needed a whole new a/c system because they couldn’t find a leak. Long story short…it was an obvious leak and I fixed it. Friend is happy, friend gets to keep her $5700.00. I’m happy I could help but I’m pi**ed that companies are out there that try screw people over. Yes, I’m supposed to be retired but I can’t let this s**t happen to people

I've recently been thinking about the term "Tradesman". A true "tradesman" will give you his skill and trade it for a breakfast sandwich or a dinner for two if it wasn't a big deal to fix your problem. I loved being a Tradesman - I've landed a few good meals in the area lol. Seriously though, a good tradesman will literally trade his (or her) services for your services - that's what it's all about

I've heard a wonderful bit of news lately. It seems that "Apprenticeships" are on their way back (or at least in the spotlight) I owe my entire life and career to Turner Refrigeration - at the time - got certified to train 4 apprentices. 10,000 classroom hours, 4 years of hard labor, classes at BOCES to learn motor control and welding. I can't express how grateful I am to have had such an opportunity. To the young people that are looking for a career that they may never stop doing - Keep your eyes open for an apprenticeship near you

As one of the “last of the Mohicans”- I must say its been a great journey. I Learned more than I knew and knew more than I learned over time. I pledge a life of Lee Silliman and just keep plugging away. I not retiring, I’m just going slower. Thank you to all my customers over the years…it was nice to leave you smiling. Been a good life- I wish more young people would learn a trade and discover what it’s like to help people and leave them with a smile…
