Distance matters, and how materials move matters even more.

Across California, reducing average aggregate haul distances by just 15 miles could eliminate 178 million truck miles annually, save 23 million gallons of fuel and reduce 238,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.

At Graniterock, rail is part of that solution.

By moving materials by rail, we can significantly reduce reliance on long-haul trucking. A single train can take hundreds of truckloads off the road, helping ease congestion and reduce wear on public infrastructure.

Local sourcing already makes a difference, but pairing it with rail takes that impact even further.

Smarter sourcing leads to smarter transportation, and ultimately better outcomes for California.

Nothing compares to a freshly paved road.

Our crew delivered a smooth, durable surface in San Francisco built to last and keep drivers moving safely for decades.

As California continues investing in improving existing infrastructure, we’re proud to be part of getting the job done right.

In the late 70s, Graniterock hired its first two women drivers, one of whom was Ricki Mancebo.

At the time, the construction industry was generally not considered a place where women worked. By then however, Graniterock had already been led by women for a significant portion of our history, so we knew that was not the case.

Although Ricki hadn’t originally planned to become a truck driver, the path felt natural. Her father had worked at Graniterock since the 1950s, and as she puts it, she grew up “living and breathing Graniterock.”

Motivated in part by being told she couldn’t, Ricki stepped into the role determined to prove otherwise. She drove a bottom dump at night, hauling rock to our concrete plants, quietly challenging expectations with every mile.

Women like Ricki helped pave the way for generations of other women, building a legacy of opportunity and long, rewarding careers at Graniterock.

Another major paving job completed.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Graniterock crews wrapped up a critical pavement project along 19th Avenue, completing full lane rehabilitation on a route that carries thousands of drivers every day. The team wrapped up the final phase ahead of schedule, reopening lanes earlier than planned and minimizing disruption to the public.

The work included removing worn pavement, repairing underlying roadway issues and placing brand new asphalt in both directions to restore long‑term performance and ride quality on a highly trafficked corridor in San Francisco.

Getting this done in San Francisco adds an extra level of complexity. Heavy traffic, tight conditions, limited access and constant coordination meant every phase had to be planned and executed the right way.

This is the kind of project our team is built for. Large‑scale infrastructure, challenging environments and delivering quality where it matters most!

Same quarry, 126 years of history.

Every one of these photos was taken at our Wilson Quarry, with different generations of crews carrying the work forward. The equipment has changed, the scale has grown and the techniques have evolved with time, but the foundation of it all has never wavered.

The early mornings, the long days and the pride in doing the job right and knowing it matters has stayed true for generations. It is still the same high-quality people putting in the work and building something that lasts.

One of the more unique parts of the MST SURF! project is where it starts.

An abandoned rail corridor, originally planned to stay in place, ultimately had to be fully removed to clear the way for a dedicated transit route based on Coastal Commission requirements.

The work began with taking out nearly 34,000 feet of old tracks. From there, the focus shifted.

What was already on the ground became part of the next phase. Our crew processed and reused the existing ballast, crushing on site and turning it into more than 30,000 tons of base material to be used throughout the project.

Same space, completely reworked to serve a new purpose. Complex problems require unique solutions, and our team knows just how to get them done right!
