Four years ago, we lost a valued member of our Five Star family. Zane Reilly was a dedicated directional driller who tragically lost his life when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and drifted into the work zone, killing Zane.

Zane is fondly remembered as a friendly, outgoing individual with a sharp sense of humor. He was a true jack-of-all-trades, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, as well as working on cars and trucks.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hazards that our workers face every day, especially when working near roadways. You can help lessen that danger by slowing down and minimizing distractions in work zones. Hopefully, by sharing Zane’s story, we can ensure that accidents like this never happen again.

We miss you, Zane. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.

GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping is an aspect of construction that you might not be aware of. GIS specialists, like our own Richard John, build and maintain interactive digital maps of active job sites to assist crews working in the field.

These maps help to mitigate potential problems, keep crews on schedule, and deliver the best utility work possible. GIS data can also be shared with customers to help update their systems and records.

Richard began his career by working for a telecommunications company. After several years, he was eager to apply his skillset to field work and took a position at Five Star. In his current role, Richard gets to build projects from scratch and manage them all the way through to completion.

“The most satisfying part of my position,” he said, “is building the map project and seeing it being used. When someone uses the map, likes the functions, and uses it to make their workload easier, that is a truly remarkable feeling.”

Richard offered this guidance to anyone interested in pursuing GIS as a career, “My advice is to be curious. GIS is a fascinating but challenging industry. Every day, there are challenges in everything from fieldwork and map design to data transfer and system integration. There is always more to the story, so being curious helps uncover the truth to get to the core of the story.”

As Five Star’s Safety Administrator, Madison Parker works hard to ensure that our employees go home safely at the end of each day.

Madison first gained experience as a Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment intern in a manufacturing setting. That experience allowed her to take an active role in implementing meaningful safety initiatives. However, what drew her to utility construction was how different it was from a manufacturing environment.

“Every job site presents different hazards and challenges that require you to evaluate how the work can be completed more efficiently, but, most importantly, assessing how it can be performed safely,” she said.

Madison is currently overseeing the implementation of a new safety application designed to streamline our safety recordkeeping. Her other responsibilities include maintaining employee training records, managing safety resources such as toolbox talks, and developing daily inspection forms for employees in the field.

Madison offered this advice for anyone interested in pursuing a career in corporate safety.

“Start by becoming familiar with workplace safety and understanding why it is important. Take advantage of opportunities to earn certifications, such as First Aid/CPR or OSHA training. OSHA 10 Hour is a great place to start. The safety field is constantly evolving, so learning is an ongoing part of the job, which is why you should never be afraid to ask questions.”

Elizabeth Laska never pictured herself in the construction business, but she took a job scheduling gas meter replacements to help her pay for grad school. Over time, she found that she really enjoyed the work and decided to forgo grad school to continue working in the industry.

Today she works as an Assistant Project Manager for Five Star’s Fiber division. In this role, Elizabeth works to ensure that our in-house and subcontractor crews have the most up-to-date information for each job. This involves checking design specs, dealing with permits, managing billing, and communicating with stakeholders across the organization.

Elizabeth loves the challenge that comes with Project Management. “When problems do come up, whatever they may be, it is very satisfying being able to work with all the different resources (people and/or software platforms) available to me in order to find solutions to those problems,” she said.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in Project Management, Elizabeth had the following advice, “Make sure you know how to teach someone something—and teach them well. They don’t know the vision you have in your head, so you need to be able to show them with clear steps and expectations.”

In honor of Careers in Construction Month, we are highlighting some of the many unique and interesting positions our industry has to offer.

Kyle Niles didn’t start out in construction. In fact, for several years, he worked in Plant Maintenance. Kyle was interested in a career change and, after a relative told him about Five Star, he decided to try his hand at construction.

Today, Kyle is a General Foreman, responsible for keeping all projects organized and on schedule. Some of his daily duties include reviewing prints for accuracy, submitting start notices, ensuring that job sites are properly marked, and supporting the crews with any day-to-day job issues.

“After seven years in my previous career, I decided to take a chance and join Five Star,” Kyle said, “Looking back, I’m glad I made that decision.”

“If you’re looking for a career where you can work hard, see what you accomplished at the end of the day, and take pride in what you helped build, utility construction is a great opportunity.”

Our employee Richard John recently attended Geospatial Professional Network's GIS-Pro Annual Conference for geospatial professionals. As an ARC GIS Specialist, Richard creates 2D and 3D interactive maps that are used by field crews, customers, and project management staff.

The conference provides specialists like Richard with the opportunity to stay current on industry trends, learn about innovative GIS applications, and gain fresh ideas from a diverse group of industry professionals.

“The conference was exhilarating and stimulating,” Richard said. “Getting to know the people, their background, and their applications was truly phenomenal. It has not only brought new ideas to me, but to the business, and GIS in general. This is truly a great community to be a part off.”

At Five Star, we are committed to developing our people through events like the GIS-Pro Conference, because when one of us grows, the whole team gets stronger.
