Our recent post about Jake Marquardt was not the only time one of our field employees has saved someone’s life. Nearly one year ago, another one of our operators, Terry Dahm, took action when he noticed smoke pouring from a nearby house.

After dialing 911, Terry rushed into the home where he a found a man sleeping inside. Terry woke the man up and got him out of the building before the situation turned tragic. The man had escaped wearing only a pair of shorts, so Terry even went to a nearby gas station and bought him a shirt.

We are proud to have people like Jake Marquardt and Terry Dahm on our team. Their actions reflect the culture of safety we’ve built at Five Star, one that inspires our people to carry those values with them both in the field and off.

Today, we’re recognizing our employee Jake Marquardt, whose quick thinking helped save a life while working in Calumet Park, IL.

It was just a routine Thursday afternoon when Jake noticed a woman on the side of the road, giving the Heimlich maneuver to a five-month old baby. Jake quickly parked the machine he was operating and came to the woman’s aid.

Luckily, Jake is certified in CPR. After determining that the baby was choking, Jake held the baby face down and delivered a series of back blows that freed the obstruction from the child’s throat.

When the emergency was over, Jake directed the woman to a neighborhood fire department where they could assess the child’s health. Later that day, Jake made a point to check in with the personnel at the fire department, who told him that the baby had recovered and was in ideal health thanks to Jake’s quick thinking.

Thank you, Jake, for your awareness in the field. Your heroic actions prove that we don’t just work in the community; we do our best to take care of the people who live there too.

If you want your employees to give their very best, you must be willing to invest in their success. That’s why we prioritize training and leadership programs designed to teach our people the critical skills they need to advance throughout their career.

We offer targeted training for specific Foremen and Superintendent roles, as well as general learning opportunities designed to help our people become more effective leaders, regardless of their current role.

Wellness is another priority here at Five Star, because when people take care of themselves, they are better prepared to take care of others. We offer regular Lunch & Learn meetings centered on a variety of Wellness topics, as well as access to Five Star Allies and other support programs.

Maintaining wellness is not a solo undertaking. As individuals, it is vital that we build support systems to help us manage the overwhelming stress that comes from both our jobs and our lives.

One of the ways we do that here is through our peer support team, Five Star Allies. We built this group around one simply daily habit, checking in with each member’s personal goals. Whether your goal is related to your career, your family, or your health, the group is there to help hold you accountable and offer targeted encouragement to help you achieve your ambitions.

Here is what one of our members had to say, “I joined not sure what to expect. Now that I’m a few months in, I am so glad I joined. We encourage each other on the low days and celebrate the wins. It’s also a great way to interact with others in the office that you normally don’t work with."

Everyone encounters stress at some point in their lives, but persistent stress can have a significant impact on your overall health. Chronic stress is linked to headaches, elevated blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and raises your risk of cardiovascular disease and other serious conditions.

Stretching is one of the best ways to combat the impact of stress on your body. It can be performed in sedentary office settings or more active environments like construction sites, warehouses, and factories. Best of all, stretching can accommodate even the busiest of schedules.

The next time you find yourself feeling stressed, take 2–3 minutes to stretch key muscle groups like your shoulders, back, and legs. Simple moves like shoulder rolls, hamstring stretches, and torso twists will not only relieve tension, but help prevent strain from repetitive lifting and awkward positions.

In the scramble to meet work deadlines, attend family functions, and keep up with friends, it can become easy to put your own health on pause. National Wellness Month is a time to step back and prioritize your own well-being.

We all know that exercise is important, but it is easy to forget just how beneficial it can be. Experts have shown that regular physical activity can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by boosting endorphins and improving sleep quality.

Staying active doesn’t require making enormous changes, here are some simple things you can do right now to help make a difference:

• 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥: Even short bouts of movement like a 10-minute walk can have a positive impact on your mood.
• 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬: Put exercise on your calendar the same way you would any other important appointment.

Five Star recently took part as a Grand Slam Sponsor of the 25th Annual KWWF Charity Golf Classic, held in Lake Geneva, WI.

This event benefits Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund (KWWF), a non-profit that provides emergency financial assistance and services to Wisconsin residents facing an energy-related crisis. This includes Wisconsin’s most vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, disabled struggling veterans, and working families who must often choose between eating, heating their homes, or keeping the lights on.

Sixteen of our employees took part in the event, including 8 golfers and 8 volunteers who sold raffle tickets. A big thanks to both the Grand Geneva Hotel & Resort for hosting the event and to everyone who showed up to support this very worthy cause.

We have an exciting update. InterCon Construction will begin doing business under a unified company name: Five Star Infrastructure Services.

While the name is changing, the people behind the work are not. The same teams, leadership, and standards you rely on remain in place.

InterCon was founded in 1984, and its more than 40-year legacy of quality, safety, and craftsmanship continues as a core part of Five Star Infrastructure Services. This change allows the company to build on that foundation with additional resources, expanded capabilities, and long-term support for the field teams.

Five Star Energy Services, founded in 2020, was built by industry leaders with multi-decade experience dating back to the 1970s through companies such as Arby Construction, KS Energy, and Unite.

In addition, M&C Utilities, an underground utility contractor based in Buffalo, New York, will also rebrand and do business as part of Five Star Infrastructure Services.

Together, Five Star Infrastructure forms one of the largest utility and underground services companies in Wisconsin, with a growing footprint across the Midwest.
