North Central WI Master Gardeners

North Central WI Master Gardeners Our Association covers Marathon County and has over 40 active Master Gardener Volunteers. This is what we do! Happy Gardening everyone!

Garden Visions is north central Wisconsin’s largest gardening conference for Master Gardeners and the general public. Annual Master Gardeners Plant Sale in May provides large healthy plants and information to the public. Garden Walk in July features tours of five or six beautiful area gardens with educational displays at each garden. You can also see us working at the Extension Habitat Garden, the

Rib Mountain Wildflower Gardens, the Shade and Hosta Garden within Monk Botanical Gardens, and more. We have a booth at the Wisconsin Valley Fair where horticulture and gardening information is available. We give scholarships to undergraduate students studying horticulture, and grants to local nonprofits in our area.

Step into a garden where creativity, craftsmanship, and history come together. Dennis and Tamera Hummer have spent the past decade transforming their property into a unique landscape filled with annuals, perennials, herbs, heirloom hostas, and one-of-a-kind garden features. Tamera is the gardener, and Dennis builds, landscapes, and maintains the grounds.

Highlights include a restored grain bin, an antique hand-pump water feature, a compass garden surrounding an ornate barn cupola, and a new medicine wheel garden showcasing native plants from across the United States. Throughout the garden, vintage farm and garden artifacts add character and charm at every turn.

Join us on July 24-25 to tour the Hummer's garden and more. Tickets are $10 and available at Clearview Garden Center, 6414 Schofield Ave., Weston, and the UW-Extension Office, 1100 Lakeview Drive, Wausau. Learn more at https://ncwmga.org/garden-walk

"What's the best way to control Japanese beetles?" This was one of the questions asked at a recent "Ask a Master Gardener" session at the Landing.

It's one of the most common questions gardeners ask this time of year. The answer may surprise you—especially if you're relying on traps to solve the problem.

Find out what the experts recommend and learn the most effective way to protect your plants in our recent article in the Wausau Pilot & Review. https://wausaupilotandreview.com/2026/06/06/ask-a-master-gardener-japanese-beetles/

Help stop the spread—starting in your own garden!

Invasive plants can outcompete natives, harm wildlife, and even impact your health by creating ideal habitats for ticks linked to Lyme disease. The good news? Prevention is the easiest step.

Do your research, use trusted resources like the Wisconsin DNR invasive species page, and choose plants that support healthy landscapes. A few smart choices now can protect our gardens, waterways, and communities for years to come.

Melinda Myers shares resources and strategies in her article, Help Stop the Introduction of Invasive Plants into Wisconsin Gardens. Read more at https://ncwmga.org/learn-1
