Three Islands, Three Resorts, Different Approaches to Development
Over the years, Stanmar has planned, designed, built, and - through our sister company Little Gem Resorts - operated resorts in three very different island settings: The Nantucket Hotel + Resort on Nantucket, the Winnetu Oceanside Resort on Martha's Vineyard, and the Lovango Resort + Beach Club in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Work on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard is shaped by their island communities: ferry schedules, seasonal activity, weather, limited resources, and labor availability.
The USVI presents different challenges. Developing a resort on a largely undeveloped island meant thinking about more than just the physical buildings. Solar energy, on-island desalination, wastewater treatment systems, and the surrounding coastal environment all require careful consideration. Construction directly adjacent to a critical coral reef required careful site management while also supporting efforts to strengthen the reef and encourage new coral growth.
Working in these environments continues to reinforce Stanmar's approach: look at the whole picture early. The site and infrastructure, budget, design, construction, and operations are all interconnected, and understanding those relationships from day one helps us find the right solution for each client.
