I wanna rock! Actually, we don't wanna rock.

But here we are, excavating through a parking lot, twitching out boulders (this one is about 7 cubic yards) that are in the way of a resilient infrastructure improvement project. And by "we" I mean CH Stevenson, the contractor who won a competitive public bid for this project. I'm not thinking they are glad they won this just now as they have run into a series of large boulders.

I suspect most people have a sense that the materials under the ground are sandy soils that can be readily excavated with a normal level of effort. Not generally the case around here. Ledge, boulders, clay, we have it all.

Water and sewer never sleep. So between the judicious use of high explosives (they don't let utilities use high explosives any more but back in the day we did our own blasting), rock hammers and large hydraulic excavators the rocks eventually give way to brute force.

Meantime, if you wanna rock, call C.H. Stevenson, Inc. as I think they'd be happy to get rid of some.
