"Just a quarter to half inch of ice? What's the big deal?"

Ice is HEAVY, and when it falls in the form of freezing rain, it sticks to everything. Every leaf, branch, and twig on a tree gathering ice adds up to a lot of weight in a hurry.

Worst-case scenario for this weekend could bring some 0.5" totals to Central Texas. On a 30ft wide tree, that adds up to more than 7,000 pounds of ice, or roughly 109.5 fully-grown golden retrievers. That's enough to send some limbs tumbling into powerlines in some instances.

DROUGHT: Not good news. Every single inch of Ohio, over 28,600,000 acres is now under some classification of drought. Over 15% of the state is now in severe drought or worse.

About 13,500,000 acres of that is farmland or agricultural. Corn, soybeans and much more. It’s suffering significantly, now for the the second year in a row due to late summer drought.
