If you are looking to actually build green, the only truthful and honest way is to re cycle an antique building and re use all of the materials that you can.
Nearly every other method of construction uses large scale manufactured resourses and wasteful energy consumption. If you must buy anything new, please source it locally and hire local tradesman whenever possible.
Even as builders must adapt to meet the new energy code, there are still so many ways to use fundamental building practices and environmentally safe products.
If you are buying any building products containing glue, tar, sealant, caulk, foam, plastic, vinyl, fibers, adhesives, or any other known toxic substances, or your materials come from overseas or across the country, please re think your approach.
Proper antique buildings used lumber and timber from old growth forests that were harvested and dressed without the use of power tools. Many people don’t understand the rarity of the wood or the natural properties that it possesses. It is in fact the most high quality wood to ever exist, containing sap, pitch and natural chemistries that gave it the ability resist rot and insects. Kept dry and allowed to breath it will literally last forever. The secondary parts of an old building also typically used earth born materials with thoughtful application throughout that stood the test of time.
As corporations and mass production have taken control of the products commonly used in the building industry, the quality has been lost and the resources are only as efficient and sustainable as many companies sales efforts tell you.
We understand that building with antiques is not always affordable. Unfortunately, saving money by using modern manufactured materials is usually at someone else’s or somewhere else’s expense.
