Finishing up a little re-deck project with my buddy Nash @ Brush & Hammer Co .

I wasn’t sure this one could be saved, but once we started a little selective demo, it became pretty clear: the only way to save the structure was to completely re-deck it and make the structural repairs while it was still worth repairing.

We’re protecting the new deck with joist tape, proper gapping, and good installation practices. Once the wood loses a little moisture, Nash and the boys will be back to stain and seal it.

Doggone good tip:

If the boards on top are getting soft, there’s a good chance the framing underneath has already started going too. Catch it early, and you can save a lot more good framing, than if you wait until the decking is trashed.

Not every project is a major remodel.

Sometimes it's simply doing the small jobs the right way.

This week we're pulling permits and installing a new exterior door, complete with a small landing,proper framing, flashing, weatherproofing, and finish work. It's not the biggest project on the schedule, but every job deserves the same attention to detail.

“What most people don’t see on a deck build…”

I see situations pretty often where the focus is on how it looks, but not enough on how the load is actually carried or whether it’s been reviewed through the proper channels.

That’s where experience and doing things the right way really matter.

Everyone focuses on the top—decking, railing, color.
What actually determines how long a deck lasts is underneath:

• How the load is distributed
• Proper beam support
• Independent stair structure
• Lateral bracing (especially here in Michigan)

A deck can look great and still have issues built into it from day one.

When we build, we focus on making sure it performs just as well as it looks.

Had to borrow these from Nash because I didn’t get the shots myself — too busy working, as usual.
Appreciate the shoutout. I assembled and installed the two louvered cabinets in the laundry room and added crown to the existing kitchen cabinets to finish them off. He’s got the crown ready for paint and it’s going to tie everything together nice.
Solid project all around — Nash is making good ground on this one and doing it right. Looking forward to seeing it once everything’s wrapped up.
