It’s nice to mix things up between roofing, siding, and painting projects. Replacing rotted corners and trim boards with PVC is very rewarding, and the transformation is instant.

Step flashing is extremely important during a roof replacement. It keeps water from leaking into the structure by channeling moisture downward from one piece to the next and out onto the roof surface. This section of the roof didn’t have any.

When re-siding a home, we always check for insulation around windows and doors. This home had no insulation around the windows, and the customer noticed cold drafts during the winter. This should help, along with lowering their heating bills.

We have replaced a plethora of skylights this summer, and it seems the past harsh winter may have contributed to their failure.

The best way to check for a current active leak is with a moisture meter. The drywall might look dry, but in reality, it could be full of moisture, indicating there’s a leak.

The rubber roof had been installed wrong, fastened directly to the plywood with no slope for water to drain into the gutter. This caused water to pool against the Hardie siding, which was also improperly installed. The fix involved replacing the rubber with the proper pitch and adding a water table to the Hardie siding. The result was an excellent roof replacement.

Sometimes issues come up during a roof replacement, but nothing usually surprises me—until I ran into this one. The customer had water leaking into his home, and after removing the shingles, we discovered multiple failed repair attempts. Previous companies had removed mortar and simply added another layer of shingles on top of the old ones. Crazy!
