Do you guys do traditional lime plaster?

Yes we do! Gobbler approved!

This is just after the float coat was applied. We'll give this a couple hours then hit it with a wood float to give everything a good final compression and rough it up for the final finish coat.

Now that the nights have warmed up we can get back to work on the Campbell Study c.1832. We completed windows over the winter.

We start by removing the semi recent plaster work that has failed on the walls. Portland cement based plaster was used and has caused all kinds of issues with this soft brick. It traps moisture in the walls and causes all kinds of efflorescence and subflorescence in this case.

We will be using traditional lime mortar from Lancaster Lime Works to complete this job. It's very similar to the mortar used to repoint exterior and will allow the walls to breathe, instead of trapping moisture.

As a reminder, please don't use spray foam on your brick. EVER!

Our old shop presented us with certain challenges, necessitating a relocation of our operations.

We are currently conducting all wood window and door restoration activities in the old Wolfgang Printing building on Main Street in Follansbee, WV. The relocation caused a brief delay, but our increased space under one roof allows us to produce a higher-quality product. We can't wait to wash and repoint the front 👀

Remember the chimney at the old Carlitos on Main, that was ready to fall down? The one with the horrible stacked bond on the back that caused the failure? It was the one held together by blackjack and what looked like grout 🤔🤷

Welp, we rebuilt the back half of that and ground out the portland mortar and repointed the rest. Good for another lifetime!

Owner sent me pics now that windows are finally in.

This was just a solid double-wythe brick wall with no openings on the 2nd oldest house in Beaver, PA. We previously stripped and repointed the whole house.

We roughed out two openings, installed new stone sills, and repurposed two stone sills that were already existing, but had no openings. We also restored the firebox inside that was a mess.

We've been busy working on another local gem. This is the Campbell Study @ The Alexander Campbell Mansion in Bethany, WV. Little building was built around 1832 and needed some serious love. We are working with The Disciples of Christ Historical Society on this project.

Lots going on here. This was repointed with a very hard portland mortar and subsequently painted a few times. As the protective paint fails, it opens up cracks that allows water to oenetrate and easily pass through the soft clay brick, and then have a hard time making it's way back out of the wall. Once it gets cold it can cause huge issues, like the brick and sandstone spalling found on this structure.

To exacerbate this problem, the interior is covered in a modern cement based "plaster" that's too coated with modern latex paint. There's no place for the water to escape at this point so we so tons of efflorescence on the interior. Looks like white fuzz growing out of the wall.

We will be repointing this with an appropriate lime based mortar and replastering the interior with a traditional horse hair plaster. We are also handling the Window and door restoration on this project. Can't wait for see it finished! All lime products from this job will be from Lancaster Lime Works. We love their stuff and highly recommend their products to anyone wanting to do restoration work with period correct materials.
