🚗💦 Where Does All the Dirt, Oil, Salt, and Debris Go After You Wash Your Car? 💦🚗
Ever wonder what happens to all the dirt, oil, salt, and debris that get washed off your vehicle during a car wash? 🤔 Well, it's not just disappearing! That wastewater needs to be properly filtered and treated to protect the environment and keep the system running smoothly.
The Role of Sand Traps in Car Washes
Sand traps play a crucial role in filtering out heavy particles like dirt, sand, oil, and salt from the wash water. These contaminants can easily damage your system, clog pipes, or pollute local water sources if not properly managed. The sand trap helps separate these particles before the water enters the main treatment system.
Why Are Sand Traps Important?
1 Protects Your Septic System – By removing sand, dirt, and debris, sand traps prevent clogging and strain on your system, ensuring its longevity.
2 Prevents Environmental Damage – Sand traps help prevent pollutants like oil and chemicals from reaching local water systems, keeping the environment cleaner.
3 Improves Efficiency – A clean sand trap ensures the water flows smoothly through the system, avoiding backups and system malfunctions.
Why Do Sand Traps Need to Be Cleaned, and How Often?
Regular cleaning of your sand trap is essential for optimal performance. Over time, dirt and debris build up in the trap, reducing its ability to filter effectively and causing blockages in the system.
💡 How often should you clean your sand trap?
• For high-volume car washes, cleaning every 3-6 months is recommended.
• For lower volume washes, you may be able to clean it less frequently, but still aim for at least once a year.
Pro tip: Don’t wait for a clog or backup to occur! Regular maintenance helps you avoid costly repairs and ensures your car wash runs smoothly.

🌿 Types of Septic Drain Fields: Which One Is Right for You? 🌿

The drain field (also known as the leach field) is a crucial component of your septic system, responsible for filtering and dispersing the wastewater from your septic tank into the soil. There are several types of drain fields, and understanding which one suits your property and needs can help ensure your septic system operates efficiently for years to come.

Here are the most common types of septic drain fields:

Conventional Gravity Drain Fields
The most traditional system, where wastewater naturally flows from the septic tank into perforated pipes in trenches. Gravity pulls the water through the soil for filtration.

Pressure Distribution Systems
Ideal for sites with poor drainage, this system uses a pump to distribute wastewater evenly across the drain field. It’s more efficient in areas with low permeability.

Chamber Systems
These systems use large plastic chambers to hold wastewater and allow for better distribution over a larger area. They’re great for sites with limited space or where traditional trenches won’t fit.

Mound Systems
Mound systems are used when the soil is not suitable for a traditional drain field (e.g., high water table or clay soil). The drain field is built above ground in a mound of soil, allowing wastewater to be filtered through a specially designed sand layer.

Sand Filter Systems
A sand filter system uses layers of sand to filter out impurities. It’s often used in areas where soil conditions are poor for traditional systems. These systems can be either above ground or below ground.

Evapotranspiration Systems
These systems are ideal for areas with high water tables or where soil conditions are unfavorable for traditional systems. Wastewater is absorbed and evaporated by the soil, eliminating the need for a deep drain field.

Each type of drain field has its advantages, depending on your land's soil conditions, size, and local regulations. Regular maintenance and monitoring of your septic system are essential to ensure everything is functioning as it should!

🚗💧 Car Wash Owners: Don’t Forget About Your Sand Trap! 💧🚗

If you're running a car wash, one of the most important (but often overlooked) parts of your wastewater system is the sand trap. This key component helps filter out dirt, debris, and heavy particles before they enter your septic system—keeping everything flowing smoothly. 🚧

Why regular sand trap maintenance is crucial: ✔️ Prevents clogging: Removes dirt, sand, and debris that can lead to backups and costly repairs. ✔️ Protects your septic system: Keeps contaminants from reaching your septic tank, reducing strain and extending its lifespan. ✔️ Ensures proper drainage: Maintains optimal flow, preventing pooling or standing water around your car wash area. ✔️ Complies with regulations: Regular maintenance helps you stay compliant with local environmental laws.

Keeping your sand trap clean and well-maintained is essential for the efficiency and longevity of your car wash operation. 🛠️✨

When it comes to flushable wipes and septic systems, it's important to understand the potential issues these products can cause despite being marketed as "flushable."

The Issue with Flushable Wipes and Septic Systems:
Although flushable wipes are designed to break down in water, they often don’t break down as quickly or completely as toilet paper. Here’s why they can be problematic for septic systems:

-Slow Decomposition: Flushable wipes are often made from synthetic fibers (such as polyester or polypropylene) which do not degrade easily in septic tanks. Unlike toilet paper, which breaks down rapidly, wipes can sit in your septic tank and clog pipes or form blockages.
-Clogs and Backups: Over time, flushed wipes can accumulate in the plumbing, leading to clogged pipes or backups in the septic system. This can cause expensive repairs and even require the tank to be pumped out more frequently.
-Strain on the Septic System: Septic systems rely on the natural breakdown of waste materials by bacteria in the tank. The presence of synthetic fibers and chemicals in wipes can interfere with this process, potentially reducing the efficiency of the system and causing long-term problems.
-Costly Repairs: If flushable wipes cause blockages or damage to the septic system, repairs can be costly. In some cases, the entire system may need to be replaced or serviced more frequently.

Customer said they don’t know how the wipes got in the septic tank. Must’ve been the neighbors 🫣

Most septic tanks can hold between 1000 to 1500 gallons of waste. Despite their capacity, regular cleaning (pumping) is essential to avoid waste buildup and system failure. The frequency of pumping depends on factors like tank size, waste volume, and household size.

Here are several signs that indicate your septic tank requires attention:

-Pumping Schedule: Regular pumping prevents overflow & other issues. Larger households or smaller tanks may require more frequent pumping.

-Slow Drainage: If sinks or tubs drain slowly despite no plumbing clogs, it may signal a full septic tank.

-Standing Water: Overflowing septic tanks may cause gray water to pool near drain fields. Puddles around these areas when it's not raining indicate a full tank or blockage, necessitating immediate service.

-Lawn Condition: Excess sewage leaking onto your lawn promotes lush grass growth. Overgrown patches near the tank or drain field signal potential overflow and require prompt attention.

-Odor Presence: A full septic tank emits strong odors, particularly near drains or the tank itself.

-Gurgling Pipes: Gurgling sounds from pipes when using water fixtures may indicate a full tank.

-Sewage Backup: Backed-up sewage in drains indicates a severe septic tank issue needing immediate resolution.

If you notice several of these signs, it's essential to schedule septic tank pumping promptly. Contact Olsen Septic Service for assistance in Cache County, Box Elder County, Rich County, and parts of Southern Idaho.

How long has it been since you had your septic tank pumped?
I own and operate
Olsen Septic Service. The longest interval between pumping that I have seen was over 30 years. 😁
I dont recommend that you wait that long because it can cause drain field failure and back up into your house. It is recommended to have your tank pumped every 3-5 years.
You have a $20k wastewater treatment system in your backyard, let me help you maintain and protect your investment!
For those familiar with Kim Johnson, I bought his pump truck. I’m grateful for his guidance on getting my business started and excited for my business to become a household name in all things septic.
Among septic pumping, I also offer:
-New system installation
-Replacement and repair
-System inspection
-Tank riser installation
-Mainline blockages
