Brisbine Electric beginnings

This is my Grandpa Merion Brisbine in his truck out working on a job, we think 1948 or 1949. He was known to most as “Breezy.” He loved being an electrician, an exciting time for him, after the war. Between around 1940-1945, he worked as an electrician at Hanford Nuclear, staying in barracks during the work week, where he studied diligently, and coming home to Wenatchee to his wife and young son on the weekends. In 1948, he built a new house from the ground up, the house his children grew up in, and started Brisbine Electric. His father-in-law, Bernie Pace, for whom Pace Drive, East Wenatchee, is named, was a local builder/general contractor who contributed labor help in the construction of Grandpa’s home.

Is it time for a dimmer switch upgrade?

Older electronic dimmers were made for incandescent, tungsten-filament bulbs. 💡 They fail to dim correctly with LED or compact fluorescent bulbs.

Incandescent 60 Watt, 75 Watt, and 100 Watt “classic” A-series bulbs are no longer sold in the United States, except in specialty retro styles. Society has shifted lighting manufacture toward energy conservation. Flood bulbs and A-series shape bulbs in very low and very high wattages are still sold.

Working at the beautiful home of Brad and Jill Brisbine, designed by Brad, and largely constructed by my cousin, Joe Brisbine, 27 years ago, we encountered now-obsolete electronic dimmers.

These dimmers operated using a master and a slave configuration. The first photo shows the master. The second photo shows the slave.

New lights! Old compact fluorescent bulbs and white trims were replaced with LED lights in bronze trims at CMI Orchards.

There is everything to love about LED lights. Our customers that weren’t sure about them have loved them.

• LED lights are rated to last 50,000 hours, or estimated to be 20-25 years of moderate use.

• 7 Watt LED light is a 65 Watt incandescent equivalent.

• LEDs come in warm white (the most popular) to cool white light colors.

• Much more economical, especially when considering they don’t require the labor cost to replace bulbs.

• We can install disk lights that look similar to recessed can lights with any standard ceiling box.

• We can replace 4 ft. and 8 ft. fluorescent tubes with LED tubes and remove the ballast never having to replace it again.

• LED lights in retrofit options are available to replace inefficient HID lights and sodium v***r lights that have that awful buzzing noise and unpleasant yellow color.

• LED lights don’t attract spiders and bugs because very little energy is spent as heat loss. You can see the unsightly spider webs and bugs that collected around the old compact fluorescents pictured.

• You may even be eligible for a rebate from the PUD for upgrading to LED to offset the cost of replacement. The PUD can then sell saved energy at a higher rate to customers in Seattle and outside our local area. Contact Chelan County or Douglas County PUD Rebates for more info.

New LED exit signs at the Church of Jesus Christ on 10th in East Wenatchee. The old exit signs were made with radioactive tritium, which fades in 20 years. The Maiden Lane chapel received the same upgrade to LED last year.

Doug and Michelle Clay are working on a complete remodel of a home originally built by Rex Helton and once owned by Fred and Roberta Zitting. All new wiring inspection is complete and signed off for cover. I think they’ll really like this home when it’s finished.

Early stages of another new Helton Builders house in progress. This one will have a 600 amp service to include a workshop 🛠 and heated pool. 🏊

Compact clay soil about 4’ down is approaching the hardness of concrete, which makes for extremely arduous digging for the backhoe operator. Eight foot ground rods (3/4” copper-clad) were unbelievably difficult to drive into this soil, but we got it done. 😅 We tried a Hilti SDS Max rotary hammer (the largest size). It did nothing. The only way was by hundreds of full-swing blows with a manual sledge hammer.

Something I’ve learned in construction is that customers building their first home often don’t know how much it matters which skilled trade contractors they hire, especially the architect or drafter, the carpenters, and the electricians.

Right now I’m wiring a house for a customer who has been through multiple carpentry contractors. Earlier work was not square and straight, many things were not done to code. This involves setbacks and complications for the newly hired carpenters. So, those decisions really make a difference in meeting code, in the build quality, and how long construction will take.

Brisbine Electric has always had confidence in meeting code and passing inspection. We know the code well and we’ll meet it, if not exceed it when doing so makes sense for your needs. The inspectors here in town know that about us and regard us as friends.
