Testing your home plumbing pressure is important because unregulated water pressure could cause damage to your pipes and appliances. High water pressure acts like high blood pressure, putting constant stress on your entire plumbing system without necessarily showing immediate warning signs.
Steps to test water pressure:
- Purchase a pressure gauge: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=psi+gauge+hose&ref=nb_sb_noss
- Turn off all water.
- Make sure no taps, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, or ice makers are running.
- Connect the gauge: Remove any garden hose and twist the water pressure gauge onto the outdoor hose bib. Tighten it by hand or use pliers lightly to prevent leaks.
- Turn on the tap: Open the spigot all the way.
- Read the number: Check the dial. The plumbing code states that your water should be between 40 and 80 PSI.
If your water pressure is too high, there could be a number of things that have gone wrong. A failed pressure reducer or expansion tank are the typical culprits. If you need help, you know who to call.
