Healthy soil is more than what you can see on the surface. 🌱

Worcester County Conservation District gets into the science beneath our feet, from soil compaction and water infiltration to the bacteria, fungi, and other life that keep soil functioning.

The takeaway? Before you add to your landscape, learn what’s already happening below ground.

Healthy landscapes start with healthy soil.

The first frost has come and gone, and the garden needs you to get your hands dirty as the seasons shift!

Here is a 5-Step Post-Frost checklist for ya...

1. Harvest what’s left
Bring in tender vegetables, herbs, and anything you want to preserve before a harder freeze arrives. If you don't, they will get mushy!

2. Don’t clean up too much
Leave healthy stems, seed heads, and fallen leaves where you can. They provide food and shelter for overwintering insects and wildlife.

3. Remove diseased plant material
Not everything should stay. Remove plants showing signs of disease to help reduce problems next season - be mindful about composting them. ID your diseases and go from there!

4. Protect your soil
Cover bare ground with shredded leaves, compost, mulch, or a cover crop. Bare soil is vulnerable soil.

5. Plant while the ground is workable
There’s still time for garlic, spring bulbs, and many trees and shrubs. Cool air and warm soil make fall a valuable planting window - don't miss it!

I hope this helps as you enjoy the mid-day sun out in the garden while it lasts. 🌞

I just heard that raised beds are the #1 investment new homeowners are making in their spaces... can you believe that?

Do your own research, ask around, and ask yourself: have you considered adding a raised bed or two to your space?

Infrastructure that supports growing food and building resilience in the backyard seems like an excellent investment to me. From food quality to interaction with healthy soils, creating a space that you can engage with will give back tenfold.

Teach a man (or woman) to fish, as they say.

Invasive alert! ⚠️

Now is the time to think about invasive management!
For perennial and woody plants, their energy is moving to their roots. That means that for invasive plants, now is the time to treat them with an herbicide.

I know I know, "aren't you guys all organic?" Yes, yes we are.

AND invasive plants are a huge issue that we need to address in spaces we want to preserve or cultivate as ecosystem for native species.

Herbicide on our food and broadcast on our soils: non-starter.
Herbicide spot application on problematic species: sounds reasonable.

It's a complicated issue, and I'm sure we will host a lively discussion one day on all the competing ideas and approaches to mitigating/incorporating invasives into our ecosystems.

That said, if you choose to take the herbicide approach, now is the time.
If you want to manage them through mechanical means (pulling) inquire about that now too!

We are booking winter invasive management and brush clearing visits now.

Reclaim a little space and support your native species through acknowledgement and management of invasive overgrowth.

Reach out to schedule your management visits!

'tis the season! ✨ To start your landscape design ✨

Winter is the season for planning.

From small pollinator gardens to large landscape transformations, design is a critical part of the process. A well-designed landscape is the difference between a high-maintenance space that only flowers in the spring and a low-maintenance landscape that evolves with the seasons, offering interest and habitat from January to January.

Don't skip this step! Reach out now to see your ideas come to life in 2027!
