Here are some tips we’ve gathered for you to safely stay warm if a power outage were to occur during the upcoming storm & you do not have a generator.
‼️ This may seem like common sense to most, but living in Texas during the power outage in freezing temps made us realize that not everyone is aware of this information, and it is IMPERATIVE:
* If using a small propane heater, make sure that it is INDOOR safe! Kerosene AND Propane heaters need proper ventilation! Many outdoor heaters can cause carbon monoxide build-up quickly which is DEADLY.
* Do NOT bring your gas grill, generator, camping stove, etc. into your home as a source of heat
* Do NOT turn your car on inside of your garage & sit inside of it to get warm
* IF you are going to sit inside of your car to charge phones and get warm, make sure that your car is OUTSIDE - not in your garage, barn, shop, etc. - again, carbon monoxide is DEADLY.
âś… Eat refrigerated food first, but open the refrigerator door the least amount of times possible to keep food from spoiling too quickly.
✅Wear Layers: Layer tops, bottoms, and socks; cover your ears to make it harder for heat to escape your body. If you don’t have gloves, you can put socks on your hands! No amount of blankets (especially sleeping bags!) is too much! Putting a tent up or even making a tent out of blankets will help you trap that body heat as well! Put a mattress or blankets between you and the floor.
âś…Huddle Together: Grab everyone (pets too!) and confine yourselves to a small room - preferably with the least amount of windows. Close all doors to all rooms in the home & seal off vents in the room you gather in to help retain the body heat your family is generating. You can roll up towels for under doors and in window sills to help block drafts. Cover windows in layers with curtains, blankets, and even garbage bags to help insulate. (Again, if you are using any form of gas heat, it requires proper ventilation of the room - DO NOT use any heat source requiring ventilation in a sealed room/area!!)
âś…Use Candles: Candles do provide a good source of heat! Just remember to keep them away from children, pets and anything flammable! You should never fall asleep or leave your home while candles are burning.
âś…Prior to a large storm that may cause power outages, resulting in no running water, you can:
Fill up water bottles, water/milk jugs, containers with water - or for a larger amount of water storage, you can fill your bathtub. This will help with flushing toilets and any other non-drinking uses. Melted snow can also be used if you have no water stored.
âś…Opening doors that lead outside can drop the temperature QUICKLY inside of your home. Only open doors leading outside if absolutely necessary, or use a connecting exit, like a garage, to help prevent too much cold air from coming in all at once.
The Electric Workz Family wish you the very best & hope everyone remains safe & warm throughout this winter and always!
