Have you ever noticed trees and shrubs struggling along roads, sidewalks, or driveways after the winter? The culprit is often salt 🧂 and its effects can last far beyond the snow seasons.

The salt (sodium chloride) commonly used as a deicing agent can splash onto plants or seep into soil. Salt spray dries out foliage and buds. In the soil, high levels of salt dries out, and can kill, plant roots.

Now is the perfect time for tree trimming.

Many people falsely believe that other seasons are better to prune trees, however, dormant season is the best time for this. During the dormant season, deciduous trees do not have as much weight in the canopy from foliage that has to come down. It also allows an arborist to easily see and access the dead and broken branches. In the Winter months, there are also little to no pests and diseases that could infiltrate the tree, unlike in the wet, warm months of the year.
