Happy belated Mayday, to all who labor, everywhere. By happy coincidence, 5/1/2026 marks the first day that Hanlon Stone began filly paid health coverage for all full time employees.

Our culture at Hanlon Stone is worker centric. Everyone makes a living wage, full time workers receive 19 paid days off per year and—crucially in this trade—we do not lay people off in the wintertime. This growing benefit package is the best in our trade, clearly exceeding the standards of even much larger companies.

This work is hard, heavy and requires physical determination in equal part to artistry. We center the guys doing the work not only because it is the right to do, but also because it creates a better outcome. Guys who can afford rent, who have time to be with their families, who can see a doctor when they need to do better work.

Kind clients sent finish pictures of our recent full tear down and stone chimney rebuild. Couple cool details about this project. All stone used (mostly 6” full bed) was sourced from our grout pile. Odds and ends from a couple decades blended together. The smoke shelf wall, in fact, are lined on two sides with reclaim slate pool table pieces, giving optimal smoothness and draw.

Grateful to for connecting us with her clients. Scroll all the way through to see that our four legged friends approve.

Some finish pictures of our project for Governor Baxter School for the Deaf on Mackworth Island. It’s rare to have the opportunity to create public facing work as stone masons. Rarer still to have the privilege to mark and adorn the historic and future home for a community deserving of greater visibility and belonging. This one was special.

So. Back to stonework. The past 12 months have probably been the most productive in our history. Due in no small part to a dedicated, impressive crew, without whom we are nothing.

This project gave an opportunity to explore our long term, long distance crush on panton stone. We brought in samples last winter, put up templates at our shop and convinced our clients to put up the only panton wall I’ve seen in Southern Coastal Maine.

I’m biased, mind you, but I think they made the right choice. Thanks to the good folks for sourcing.

There’s an unspoken expectation in the US that business and politics are separate realms. The vast majority of business owners, large and small, choose to not publicly engage in politics. (Continued in comments.)
