Excellent application of BioMeadow® at Wheeler Historic Farm last week. Unfamiliar with Fine fescue turfgrass? See below!

- Fine fescue is a Low-Maintenence, cool season turfgrass known for it's thin, soft, hair-like blades.

- It is often referred to as a "No-Mow" type lawn, meaning it can be left long and cutting is reduced to a couple times per season (usually late spring and fall).

- It loves shade! These grasses are perfect
under tree canopys with little sun or high elevations like Summit County. 🌳 🏡

- Drought tolerant. Fine fescue roots pe*****te deep into the soil profile where more water is available. 💧

- Great for steep hillsides where mowing is difficult due to it's "No-Mow" growing habit.

Check out this beautiful park strip renovation featuring Crushed Cobble, Blonde Boulders, and low water plants!

Pro tips for flipping your strip this summer:

- Always use commercial grade w**d barrier with woven polypropylene fabric. Dewitt Pro 5 is our favorite. Water passes through it without letting w**ds in.

- Remove at least 4-6" of soil from your park strip. More depth = less maintenance in the long run. Dust collects between rocks and over time grow w**ds!

- Take the time to swap your sprinklers to drip. Sure it's more work compared to capping them but the native plants thrive in these hot areas 🌼 🌸, the honey bees will love you 🐝, and its so much prettier!

- Wash your rock with a hose before install. Decorative rock is delivered unwashed and coated with dust that eventually ends up in your park strip giving w**d seeds the chance to germinate. This extra step keeps your beds as clean as possible and reduces future w**ds!

💧 Want to use less water this summer?

Mulch helps lock moisture into the soil, reduces evaporation, keeps roots cooler, and suppresses w**ds.

It's one of the most cost-effective ways to improve plant health while lowering your water bill.

🌿 Less water. Healthier plants. Better-looking beds.

You may have heard about the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance (TWCA) and its qualifications for drought-tolerance, but what does it actually take for a grass to earn the seal? See below to learn what our grasses go through to meet the standard.

1. Multi-Site, Multi-Year Trails:
Grass varieties are tested at different locations over multiple years. To qualify, cultivars must meet or exceed the drought-tolerance standard for at least two years.

2. Controlled Drought Testing:
- Drought Trials: Grass is grown under controlled water stress until 25% green cover remains.
- Low-Maintenence Trials: Grass is grown with minimal fertilizer and no pesticides, plus a drought cycle ensure performance under real-world conditions.

3. Standards & Experimental Layout:
- Six Standard Entries. Each trial includes six standard cultivars--two Drought tolerant, two Drought susceptible, and two commercial cultivars.
- Single Species Trials evaluate one grass species at a time to eliminate species-level differences

4. Objective Data Collection:
Digital Image Analysis (DIA): TWCA cooperators use light boxes to photograph plots at regular intervals. DIA software calculates percent green cover from RGB values in each image. Trails continue until plots drop below 25% green cover.

5. Independent Review:
Results are analyzed by university researchers who decide which cultivars earn TWCA qualification.

As water becomes increasingly limited in our region, choosing drought-tolerant grass varieties is more important than ever. Learn more at tgwca.org.

5 Frequently Asked Questions When Buying Sod:

1. Is there a minimum for pickups or deliveries? There is no minimum for pickups! You can reserve one roll if that's what you need. For deliveries our minimum is 600 SF (one pallet).

2. How often do you cut? We harvest every day. If you picked up sod on a Wednesday, it was harvested on Tuesday and brought in Tuesday evening.

3. Can I just stop in and buy some? There are days we have sod available day of, but its best to reserve in advance or call to see if we have extra and reserve. Because sod is perishable we base our daily harvests on reservations and are often sold out day of.

4. How long can sod stay on the pallet before installing? Season to season this can change but a good rule of thumb is 12 hours for a delivery and immediately after receiving for a pickup. If left on the pallet too long it can become "hot" and die.

5. What size are the rolls? Our rolls are 2'x5'. 10 SF per roll and 60 rolls on a pallet.
