💡 Electrical Education Moment 💡

🚨 Today's Topic: Is Your Electrical Panel Safe? 🚨

Did you know that some older electrical panel brands and models have a history of safety concerns?

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. Its job is to distribute electricity throughout your home and help protect your wiring from dangerous electrical overloads.

⚠️ Some older panels may have breakers that do not operate properly or may fail to trip when they should. When an electrical breaker does not respond correctly, it can increase the risk of overheating, damaged wiring, and electrical fires.

Some panel brands and models that homeowners may want to have evaluated include:

🔌 Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels
🔌 Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco panels
🔌 Certain Pushmatic / Bulldog Pushmatic panels

‼️ IMPORTANT: Having one of these panels does not automatically mean your home is experiencing an immediate emergency. However, these panels have known concerns and should be evaluated by a qualified electrician.

👀 What should homeowners watch for?

⚡ Breakers that frequently trip
⚡ Breakers that will not reset
⚡ Burning or unusual electrical odors
⚡ Rust, corrosion, or visible damage
⚡ An older panel that may no longer meet your home's electrical needs

💡 Sparky Says:

Don't ignore an older electrical panel simply because "it's still working."

If you have an older home in Lafayette, West Lafayette, or the surrounding Indiana communities, knowing what type of electrical panel you have is an important part of protecting your home and family.

⚡ Whole Home Generators & Generator Interlock Kits – Lafayette & West Lafayette, IN

Let's talk about something serious: medical equipment and power outages.

Blackout Electric LLC helps homeowners in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and surrounding Indiana communities prepare for unexpected power outages with properly installed generator solutions.

⛈️ The Problem:

Severe storms and power outages can leave your home without electricity for hours—or sometimes longer.

For some families, losing power isn't just an inconvenience. It can affect critical medical equipment and refrigerated medications.

⚠️ Why This Matters:

A power outage could interrupt electricity to equipment such as:

📍 CPAP machines
📍 Oxygen concentrators
📍 IV equipment
📍 Refrigerated medications
📍 Other essential medical equipment

🔌 Your Generator Options:

✔ Whole-Home Standby Generator
A properly installed standby generator can automatically restore power to your home within seconds when the electrical system and transfer switch are designed for automatic backup power.

✔ Portable Generator + Generator Inlet & Interlock Kit
If a whole-home generator isn't in your budget, a properly installed generator inlet and interlock system can provide a more budget-friendly way to connect a portable generator and power selected essential circuits.

Every home and medical situation is different, so it's important to determine which circuits and equipment need backup power before choosing a generator solution.

🏠 Don't wait until the next storm knocks out your power.

If you're in Lafayette, West Lafayette, or a surrounding Indiana community, Blackout Electric LLC can help you explore your generator options.

💧 Water & Electrical Safety Alert 💧

Indiana has experienced a lot of rain and severe weather recently, and all that water can create problems for your home's electrical system—especially outdoor electrical equipment.

🚨 Here's a real situation Blackout Electric LLC recently responded to:
A customer's electrical meter housing had become severely rusted due to water exposure and corrosion. When the electric company came out to replace the meter, they discovered the meter was arcing inside the damaged meter housing.
⚡ This created an urgent electrical safety hazard.
The customer called Blackout Electric, and we responded with an emergency service call. We coordinated the necessary power shutdown, electrical repairs, inspection, and materials to get the problem safely corrected, and power restored.

🏠 Sparky's Safety Tip:

Don't wait for an electrical emergency to discover that your outdoor electrical equipment is damaged.

Watch for:

🔎 Rust or significant corrosion
🔎 Cracks or holes in electrical equipment
🔎 Water intrusion or signs of moisture
🔎 Damaged meter housings or electrical enclosures
🔎 Anything that looks deteriorated or unsafe

If you notice rust, holes, water damage, or other deterioration, don't ignore it. Your electrical equipment may need to be repaired, replaced, or upgraded.

⚠️ Never open or work on electrical equipment yourself. If you see damage or are concerned about the condition of your electrical system, contact a qualified electrician for an inspection.

At Blackout Electric LLC, we provide troubleshooting, emergency electrical service, repairs, and electrical upgrades for homeowners in Lafayette, West Lafayette, and surrounding Indiana communities.

💡 Electrical Education Moment 💡

Today's Topic:

Why the Wires Between Your Meter and Electrical Panel Matter

❓ Did You Know?

The wires between your electric meter and your electrical panel are some of the most important in your home. If they're installed incorrectly, they can become a serious safety hazard.

🚨 Why It Matters:

The photos marked Incorrect show service entrance conductors that were not properly protected. For this type of installation, the National Electrical Code requires these conductors to be installed in approved conduit. Without that protection, they're more vulnerable to damage, which can increase the risk of electrical faults or even a fire.

There was another issue as well—the neutral conductor was undersized for a 200-amp electrical service, creating another potential safety concern.

✅ The photo marked Correct shows the conductors properly protected in conduit from the meter to the electrical panel.

🔍 Signs You May Have a Problem:

✔ Large electrical wires exposed outside the wall
✔ Cuts, nicks, or damaged insulation on electrical wiring
✔ A burning plastic smell or an unusual electrical odor
✔ Recent panel work that doesn't look professionally installed

⚡ Sparky's Tip:
If you notice exposed service wires or you're unsure whether your electrical system was installed correctly, have it inspected by a licensed and insured electrician.

At Blackout Electric LLC, we're committed to helping homeowners stay safe through quality workmanship and electrical education.

💡 Electrical Education Moment 💡

🤔 Today's Topic: What Does an Electrical Burning Smell Mean?

❓ Did you know?
You should never smell your electrical system. If you notice a burning, fishy, or hot plastic smell, it could be a warning sign that something is overheating behind your walls or inside an outlet.

👀 Take a look at these photos.
These are real photos from a recent Blackout Electric LLC service call.

A homeowner contacted us because they noticed an electrical burning smell coming from their bedroom. We immediately advised them to turn off the affected breaker while we headed to their home.

When we arrived, we discovered this outlet badly burned behind a nightstand—completely hidden from view.

🚨 Why This Matters
This outlet was overheating and could have resulted in an electrical fire if left undiscovered.

Many dangerous electrical problems happen behind furniture, inside walls, or where you can't easily see them. The smell is often the first warning sign.

❓ What Should You Do?

✔ Locate where the smell is coming from (if it's safe to do so).
✔ Turn off power to that circuit or area if possible.
✔ Do not continue using the outlet or plug anything into it.
✔ Call a licensed electrician as soon as possible.

At Blackout Electric LLC, we help homeowners throughout Lafayette, West Lafayette, Oxford, Battle Ground, Dayton, Delphi, Monticello, and surrounding Indiana communities with:

💠 Electrical troubleshooting
💠 Electrical repairs
💠 Outlet and switch replacement
💠 Electrical panel upgrades
💠 Whole home generator installation
💠 Lighting upgrades and more

A strange electrical smell is never normal. When in doubt, have it checked before a small problem becomes a costly emergency.
