Spotlight in the News
USAA has recently faced significant scrutiny and high-profile lawsuits regarding its handling of property and casualty insurance claims. Major news stories and public complaints outline several key issues:

California Wildfire Lawsuits: In June 2025, homeowners in Los Angeles County filed lawsuits against USAA, alleging systematic insurance fraud and negligence. The policyholders claim the insurer dramatically underestimated their home replacement costs, leaving them underinsured and unable to rebuild after wildfires.

Bad Faith Verdicts: The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld a $15 million punitive damages and attorney fee award against USAA regarding a bad-faith claim stemming from Hurricane Katrina. In another major case, a jury awarded a policyholder $114 million (including $100 million in punitive damages) over the insurer's unreasonable delay and bad-faith tactics in settling a claim.

Systemic Claim Denials: Multiple homeowners and veterans have spoken out in the news and taken legal action, alleging that USAA uses hardline strategies like "stair stepping" (gradually increasing payouts only after pushback) and ties employee compensation to claim payment limits. A recent federal lawsuit filed by the Spector family highlighted these widespread allegations.

Community Sentiment: Across platforms like Facebook, users express frustration over uncommunicative adjusters, denied storm claims, and dropped policies after decades of membership. Some policyholders point out that USAA's denial rates for homeowners insurance rose as high as 50% in recent evaluations
