Heat Advisory Today ☀️🔥

This morning one of my weather apps issued a heat advisory, and standing out here on a construction site, you can definitely feel it.

In this video, the crew is setting a girder into place while another welder is finishing connections on a previously installed section. Once these girders are in place, the next step will be setting the bar joists that help form the building’s roof structure.

What many people don’t realize is that construction doesn’t stop because it’s hot. Welders, ironworkers, operators, laborers, and other trades work through some pretty extreme conditions. Add welding, hot steel, safety gear, and direct sunlight, and it can make for a very long day.

It’s a good reminder to stay hydrated, look out for one another, and respect the men and women who keep these projects moving forward no matter what the weather is doing.

It’s hard to appreciate the size of these panels until you’re standing right next to one while it’s moving.

What you’re watching is a crane carefully maneuvering a massive concrete tilt-wall panel around the building and into position. Every lift requires teamwork, communication, and trust between the crane operator and the crews on the ground.

I’ve spent decades in construction, and watching these lifts still never gets old. Seeing a pile of concrete, steel, and dirt slowly transform into a building is one of the things I enjoy most about this industry.

I was driving by a nearby project and had to turn around for this one.

Watching an excavator tear down a building never gets old.

The amount of power these machines have is incredible. Steel, concrete, masonry, roof structure—it grabs hold and pulls it apart like it’s nothing.

Most people see an excavator digging dirt. What they don’t always realize is that the same machine can be equipped to perform demolition work and take apart an entire structure piece by piece.

Construction isn’t always about building something new.

Sometimes it starts with taking something old down first.
